I know you don't turn out when its frosty but is it just in the mornings or sunny or just at all?? not been turning out at all when the frost out to be safe but just wondered as the lami sites aren't that clear?

Also what about in the snow?? we had a wee bit today but it made me think will he have to stay in then as well?

Ant thoughts appreciated

Lucy is laminitic and i have always turned her out in frost and never had a problem. She has lived out 24/7 in a bare field so has been out in snow also without problem.
 
Thanks Lou_Lou - think I'll just stick to keeping him in to be safe - he doesn't seem to mind - he must have got used to it for the nearly 5 months box rest at the beginning of the year!!!

The frost brings out the fructans in the grass (sugars) so its best not risk it . Im pretty sure that your at no risk with the snow.
 
I was advised to not turn out on frosty/snowy days, especially if it was also sunny. the grass produced the fructans (sugars) and then due to the cold temperatures (below 5degrees) the grass didnt utilise the fructans by growing, hence there was more of a problem for laminitics. I have just lost my little shettie this year due to laminitis, but stuck to this rule above and thankfully managed to prevent any grass related laminitis with him for the last 5 years. (he had cushings which is why I eventually lost him), best of luck and hope your pony continues to do well.

I keep my shetland in on days when its frosty/snowy and sunny. He goes out at 3pm ( lives out 24/7 normaly)comes in at 7am. Not had laminitis now for 8 years
