Have seen the weather for this weekend,, so do I keep his MW on or change to MW by day and change to HW by night.

I am really doubting my ability at the minute , as last year he drooped to skeletor, and really dont want that to happen again.

So any answers welcombed

I've got a TB who is a poor doer - he is in a MW during the day at the moment, but he is being fully clipped out on Saturday so if it stays as chilly as today he will go into his HW during the day after clipping

He is in at night, but if he was out he would be in a HW - it is apparently 4 degrees around us tonight

It is hard for anyone to say what rug your horse should wear - it depends on your weather, how much shelter he has, or how draughty his stable is, his age, breed, condition, health, whether he is clipped.
My Tb has been out in a HW, but as she's 21 and difficult to put condition back on if she drops it, she's got a 150g underrug on for overnight (its meant to be wet, breezy and frosty here).

My boy is out 24/7 with a no fill rainsheet on - aren't I a mean mummy

I would evaluate it when you go there - try and go as late as is reasonable, so the temperature will have dropped a bit. Feel if he is hot or cold - if he is hot/warm leave it, if he feels chilly then stick his HW on.
I always err on the side of under-rugging, but then again I am used to good doers. One thing I did read recently though that was interesting, is that a horse drops as much weight from sweating from being too hot from being over rugged, as they do from shivering from being too cold from being under rugged. Just something to think about.
Hope it helps (although I feel I have just waffled on and not been much use!)

That is excatly wht I am afraid of, I feel last yar I over rugged him and thst played a part in his weight loss.

I was thinking of putting his under rug on under his MW, but will that be warmer than his HW.

BTW, he is a TB, 16hh, and 26, lives out. When he was at home would still be in a MW but had a shelter all to himself. When I go in the am he still feels warmish, and for the first time in a year had a winter coat, after all his stress last year never got woolley

If he still feels warmish, personally, I would leave it as his MW. It's much easier for a horse to have a quick canter round the field and warm up a bit, than it is for them to cool down. It is still fairly mild for this time of year.

to be honest its that kind of weather at the moment where they won't be shivering their socks off if they are in MW and they won't be sweating their guts out in a HW

I agree that over rugging is as bad as under rugging but also think HW is better than MW with underug as must get a bit stuffy under 2 rugs and if they do get bit hot its not so breathable.

I would go with what you think. if horse is nice and toasty in a MW when you go up there i'd just leave it as can always move round and keep warm.

Although it is not as mild as it has been the last few weeks it is still not really cold.

I would be tempted to stick with the MW rug but just make sure he has plenty of hay to munch on.

Obviously if the base of his ears feel cold then it is time to up the rugging. I was told that having a neck cover was the equivalent of an extra rug.

Good luck with whatever you decide.
