Cheap baby shampoo works wonders on my lads tail, and really scrub with your hands, it should do the trick

cold water from head to toe. then sponge on some quiksilver shampoo. rub this in and then scrub them all over with a rubber curry comb -this is a new trick i just learnt! rinse rinse and rinse again and voila!! while the coat is still wet put loads of mane and tail spray in tail and on flanks where they get pooh stains lying down. this stops dirt from getting into coat and is much easier to keep clean. you can also bleach tails. one thing though...no matter what do not leave quiksilve on too long...they end up purple tinted!!!
 
then slap on quiksilver and leave for about 40 mins to an hour depending on how purple you want to go. it does fade/wash out after a few days so would be cute for a fancy dress!!
