Im getting my new horse next week.
She's slightly underweight, Im planning on letting her have 24 hour turnout unless its really heaving raining. Do I need to get a Light weight or medium weight turnout rug to use at the minute?

I am between rugs at the moment, my lad is in a medium weight but without a neck so he doesn’t get too warm.

It is a bad time of year, you could go for a light weight with a neck cover then put a fleece on underneath until it gets really cold.

i am a bit soft with mine and like them warm in the field.

Forgot to mention mine do eventually come in over night in winter.

Hi, i would say it depends on the type of horse, tb type, cob type ect.

With you saying that this horse is slightly underweight, i wud be more inclined to say a lw which gives you an option of using a fleece for additonal warmth if required.

My Mare is a mw IDxcob, she is in good weight ect but really feels the cold, she is currently turned out in a lw during the day and a lw-mw overnight, however there are are few cobs on my yard which are turned out with no rug at present and some already in hw's!

Is this horse currently turned out at the moment? it might be worth checking with the existing owners for advice

I would say lightweight at the min, and as others have suggested, you can always then put a fleece on underneath if she needs it. My tb is currently out in a lightweight, but will be coming in at night in the next couple of weeks as he feels the cold and will start to lose condition.
Good luck with her!
