iv tried a few saddles on my 4yr old cob x tb and have decided on a wintec cair so that i can change the shape of it as he grows, problem is that like every other saddle iv tried when in trot it rises up at the back any ideas how to stop this as it seems every saddle iv tried does it in varying degrees he is bum high as still lots of growing to do so would this be making it worse any suggestions gratefully received....ps please dont say get saddle fitted as i dont have the finances for that at the present

Is he very flat backed like a cob or has a sloping back like a TB?

If it is rising at the back, suggests that it is too wide in front and the saddle is not balanced.

Sorry to ask this question but where did you or are you going to buy the saddle from.

Most saddlers I know have a fitting service that if you buy the a saddle from them they don't charge for the fitting?

sorry wasnt hiding was at work
he isnt flat backed like a cob he is more on the tb side the saddle is a wintec synthetic bought from a friend with all the changeable gullets so maybe he needs a different gullet then if being too big at the front makes it lift at the back maybe i should try the next one down

av to watch though around his shoulders that it doesnt sit too low there its a nightmare i know the right thing to do is get one fitted but dont have the money for it

Wintecs are the wrong shape for any horse but the only ones that it even remotely attempts to fit are TB types.

I would get the gullets and place them directly on his back, behind the shoulder where the gullet of the saddle normally fits. Find the gullet which sits there without causing any pinching and which is not too wide (i.e. there is no room between the gullet and the base of the wither). Use that gullet in the saddle.

Please do not just mask the problem with loads of polypads and sheepskins. If the saddle needs to be brought higher in front to make the back sit evenly, use a front riser. These are about £15 for a wintec one.

I know keeping horses is really expensive, but for the sake of £40 or so to get a saddle fitter out, I would forgo something else, like a couple of lessons etc. You might end up paying a lot more for physio/vets to sort out a damaged back.

Just because they have changeble gullet systems this does not mean they will fit every shape and size of horse. This is was at first an fantastic marketing idea, one saddle fits all....couldn't be further from the truth.

If you saddle bobs up and down then it really does not fit.

Its not just around the withers and shoulders, a saddle should lay in contor with your horses back.

Wintecs are great if they fit, just like any saddle is...if it fits.
Do yourself favour and ditch the Wintec, take time to find one that fits your horse well, it will save you money in the long run and your horse a lot of pain and schooling issues.
