Help I'm having a wobble!

My step daughter has had a part share in a pony for a few months. We've now been offered a full loan/lwvtb. Said pony is 14hh cob (I've not measured). He's takes a 6ft rug, quite a compact wee fellow. My SD is 12 and a half. I am 5ft4 and about 11 stone (working on it!) and ideally I'd love to be able to ride to in the future but I'm worried if I will be able to get a saddle to fit him and me? My last 2 horses have been 16.2 tbx so this is something completely different for me, and slightly smaller than what I had in mind when the time came to get out next pony. However, he is absolutely 100% dependable out hacking and as this is what my daughter enjoys the most to me it makes him worth his weight in gold, he's also wormed his way into my heart ? I'd also be interested in what people think hes worth in the current market.

I'm the same height as you (although shortish legs) and I ride my similar height pony in a 16inch saddle- it's not perfect for me, but it's perfectly manageable, if that makes sense? I am a bit lighter, though, which probably helps me fit in the saddle, too?

Hard to say what he's worth without knowing age/experience etc.

I think if your step daughter feels confident on him, then it makes sense to keep going with him for now. Possibly/probably in a year or two she may want something bigger anyway, which may be a bit closer to what you prefer?

Originally from Ireland is a ride and drive (never driven since he's been here) he's not done much schooling wise. But is unflappable on the ground, easy to handle catch, load and 100% out and about.

I'm hoping to get down to 10 stone over the next few months but until then I suppose I won't know if I'm going to fit, might be a few years of walking for me ?

Do you know what size saddle he will take?
And what kind of cob are we talking? Finer type, leg in each corner type etc?

He's got a 17 inch saddle at the moment, but I'm not 100% convinced of the fit and will be getting it checked as soon as there is someone in the area - the joys of living rural - he's not a fine type but not a real chunky monkey either. Tbh cobs are totally new to me!

My 14.16hh cob in a 6ft rug had a 17 inch saddle, made to measure before I owned him. I’m a bit shorter than you, but was only a bit lighter and he was fine with me on him

Our 14hh cob can only take a 16inch saddle as a maximum and is ridden by my teenage daughter of 5ft 3. He was ridden in his previous home in a 17inch but it was too long for him. Good luck, he sounds lovely. As to price it prob depends where you are in the country? Approx £4000?

He sounds perfect for her, she has confidence in him.....worse case for you is having to learn to drive and getting a trap if you can't shrink down for the saddle ?

I am your height (though lighter) and I fit just fine on a chunky 12.2hh - she has a 16” saddle which is the perfect size for me.

Saddles vary hugely, in space for the rider, amd how much room they take up o the horses back, or e 17" can be very different to another. They even differ where they sit you, isally as far forwards as possible....

I would find a good fitter experienced in cobs etc and ask them for a quick consult if possible. It is usually possible to get a half decent idea from the right photos.

My 14hh mare who had 5'9" rugs had a bit of space left over with a 17" saddle, J cob is in 6' rugs and just manages a 17" saddle that has a comparatively short footprint. It's very particular to each individual horse and each individual saddle, some 17" saddles have much shorter footprints than others, I know a Wintec would be far too long on J. I'm 5'4" and happy heightwise on 14 hh, competed my mare successfully up to 1.05m sj, I did spend a bit of time wishing she was a little bigger but that was so she would make horse distances when jumping easier! J also grew over an inch between 6 and 8 yrs.

Thanks, definitely something to look into, due to my location it's limited on who will actually visit the area.
