Sorry another towing question, yawn!!

So my question is an Ifor Williams trailer 510, towing vehicle is a 2014 Renault traffic van with a towing capacity of 2000kg, to tow one pony 420 kg on a pre 1997 license. Cannot get a straight answer anywhere and it's so annoying, does this sound ok.?
 
On a pre-97 licence it ought to be fine as long as the unladen weight of the trailer + pony isn't more than 2000 kg. You aren't as restricted as we are on the post-97 licences so you don't need to worry so much about the whole lot being under 3.5T.
 
From a quick check, the MAM comes in at 2700kg, unladen 1000kg.

So straight off your van won't cut it.

But....1000kg plus 420kg pony pls all sorts of tack would be well within 2000kg. And you would be fine with your pre-97 licence.

So.....ask Ifor to downplate it to 2000kg and you're away.

Simple really :)

Yes on pre 97 licence !!

Doesnt need down plating on the trailer. MAM only significant if you are looking to use on a B licence after 97.

OH DEAR !! - not this again !!!!

There is NO LAW OR RULE which states that the towing capacity of a vehicle (2000) must be able to accommodate the MAM (2700) of the trailer BUT there are plenty of internet MYTHS !!

This trailer weighs 1000 empty so as long as you do not load more than 1000 into it then IT IS PERFECTLY LEGAL

ADD - to be fair to turnbuckle it is probably not their fault that some numpty has passed on misinformation
