Whilst I was on holls we had the normal haylauge delivery. The guys told the liverys" you wont want to feed and hard feed with this its rocket fuel" the then said it was this years cut

Should we be feeding this years cut, if we dont use if for a while will it become less "rocket fuel"

The nutritional value shouldn't deteriorate (the rocket fuel) as it's vacuum packed. I buy second rate haylage for my lot rather than top quality as I don't want to land on the moon!

As far as I have been told, haylage does not last nearly as long as hay and is best used asap.

This could be wrong, but can only tell you what I have been told

I don't feed this years cut until about oct/nov, but its ready before that.

Since feeding haylage, my hard feed bills have more than cut in half - a good thing I would say with 9 horses!!!

The use-by date on Horsehage is usually about a year after I buy it - this could be different to normal haylage though.

Can someone please then clarify. I always thought you fed less haylage, but then some people say you feed more......

CONFUSED, as horse really likes it

You def need to feed more haylage than hay.

Haylage has a higher water content than hay (can't remember the average percentage, but will post it later if I can find a link)

Anyway, you need to feed more haylage than hay weight wise, because of the weight of the water in it. eg If I fed 2 slices of hay I would feed 3 slices of haylage.

Hope that helps.
