Just had a text message from the shettie we have on loan owner, asking me if I would be interested in buying him. Here's the story -
We have had him since last Aug and he came to us in a terrible state with sweet itch, after treating him with Camrosa he came on in leaps and bounds, the owner has been to see him once in this time, they are not really horsey people. I have put a lot of work into keeping him happy, he is only five and would have a home for life with us as there are two other ladies at my stables that help care for him and are teaching him to long rein. Would hate to think of him going and getting in a state like he was when he came, you couldn't even touch his mane or neck he was in that much pain

. Anyway she has told me to think about it and make an offer, I don't really feel like he is worth much as he is a high maintanence pony with his sweet itch and i have put a lot of work into him, but at the sametime i don't want to offend her by offering too little, i have got his insurance papers from when she insured him and the purchase price is £100. Here is some photo's from when he came and one from yesterday.

WHEN HE CAME.. Sorry they are big..

You couldn't ride him when i got him as he was in too much pain and a saddle irritated him, i did actually get him for my little boy but when i saw the state of him i just had to have him! He is good on lead rein for my little boy to walk round on but very green, he has weekly long reining lessons. Handle wise he is not really ideal at the moment, my little boy does brush and lead him but he can be very nippy, which i think is to do with his age and has not really had all that much handling just taken in and out the stable before i got him. I do think he will get better in time he is just very cheeky!

offer her 100 pounds for him. He's worth the world to you, but not her. As long as she gets her purchase price back I should think she'd be happy.
Our shettie's 9 and still nippy. They don't seem to grow out of it!

I have just text her and offered her £100 and explained that this is because i have just spent nearly £100 on Camrosa, fly rug and general stuff for his sweet itch. It's really hard because he isn't an ideal pony for my son, although he isn't that intrested anymore

But he is the kind of pony that could really suffer if his sweet itch wasn't looked after properly so couldn't bear the thought of letting him go to end up like before. So i will await her reply!

I always think they are worth half the value if they have sweet itch. I sold my welsh D mare for £1000, she bred a foal, hunted, jumped a little, showed and was a good alrounder and cheap to keep. I sold her with a boet rug (200).
If your pony is not broken in and you have looked after him , if he were mine i would give him to you. £100 seems a good enough offer for him. trouble is if they dont except would you like to see him go, to who? difficult this one. are you friendly with the owners, if not try going round and chatting to them and tell them he is your pet but has lots of problems which other people would not be interested to take on. I wouldnt buy a pony with sweet itch at any cost. goood luck
PS I know its expensive BUT if you buy a boet rug you wont need all the potions and lotion, its a fantastic rug, i have used all the other rugs and finally bourght a boat rug and wow i wish i bourght it sooner, its fantastic, reccommend!!!

Thanks jubbily
He is broken now and is very good on the lead rein and willing off but needs more work, he is long reining really well and was hoping to try and break him to harness. I don't really know his owners that well i know the lady that had him onloan before me slightly better, i too wouldn't really chose to take on a pony with sweet itch, butthis is what worries me, if they wer to take him back he could end up with anyone and he really isn't a shetland you could just put in a field. With regards to a Boett, i would love to try one but don't really dare as he seems to manage to rip rugs just by rolling!

reminds me of my little Charlie!!!!

looks like she should give him to you after what you have done. We all know this would happen in a perfec world, but I would try my best to buy him!

She accepted offer of £100! I really didn't want to go any higher i'd rather have put the money towards try a boett! Right so now i need to sort is passport out, he's got a wetherbys one he he, think it's quite funny a shettie having a wetherbys passport

Also insurance as the certificate she has given me is out of date and she didn't renew it, anyone know the best place for insurance for a shettie worth £100? It's strange but now he's become mine overnight i feel like i love him more already, when they are someone else's you seem to hold back a little bit. Thanks for all your adice guys, fantastic as usual!

Charlie is sooo sweet! Bubbles looks more like that in summer! At the moment he is a fluff ball believe it or not on the last photo where he is clipped he had already had a full clip in November!

Aww...congratulations.. As owner of a sweet itch pony, I elated you get to keep him. Like you, I couldn't bear the thought of mine going somewhere and not being looked after properly (sweet itch wise).

That's fabulous!!!!

Really thrilled you bought him. I have a Shetland called Dinker (he's only 39" tall) and can't imagine parting with him. He's such a character...mild understatement!

Dinker's a handful at times, charges at you in the field, bites occasionally, but he's come on leaps and bounds since we've owned him. It'll be three years this July. Think I paid £70 for him but had to passport him myself.

Know what you mean about them being fluff balls. Mine's looking a bit shabby at the moment and I'm toying with the idea of clipping his coat out.

I'm going to start doing more with him now before i felt like he could be taken away at any stage, he will have a home for life now, the little fella really has fallen on his feet to say he was bought as a foal weaned from his mother too early at a horse auction apparently. I will get my camera out tonight and post some pictures in the gallery.

Lucky shettie has landed on his feet!.

Go for the Boett, 2nd hand ones are sometimes on ebay or on their websire 2nd hand. They offer a full repair service too!

It you prevent the sweetitch you won't have to treat it!
