My little tb 15.2hh has been on off lame for months now, his last sick note leave was by impaling himself onto a broken fence post - great !, so faced with another lay off from riding him I got myself booked in for a month with a personal trainer. After loosing just over a stone in one month, the little lad was given the all clear to bring back into work - and boy what a differance it has made to him - especially as he is totally unfit. No more shuffling round, or walking off from the mounting block, no more jibbing after 30 mins walk, really striding out etc.... now this could be a combination that i am holding myself completely differently as my core strength has changed, or because I am not such a top heavy fraction any more - maybe my balance is is much better I dont know. But i am convinced that he is moving much better with me being lighter.

By the way - my big lad wouldn't care if i put on 8 stone! he thinks i am a fly on his back at my heaviest... but again the excercise must be helping with him as i am so much stronger in the seat, so the napping and spinning out on the hacks is decreasing as much as my waist line !

Really Gingerwitch- but forgot to get my Christmas name changed

I am not sure about how your horse is feeling, but some dieting tips would be helpful! I have to lose a stone before my wedding in July, so far since xmas I only managed 5 kg when I had a tummy bug!!!! How did you lose a stone?

I am sure my horse will appreciate it too...

I've got 3 stone to loose before I starting riding again but am finding it SO hard to find my will power. :(

I need a good kick up the backside! I can't afford a personal trainer, but envy you that it worked for you. Blinking well done :)

I have lost 1 and a half stone since the new year and managed to maintain whilst my ollie was being put to sleep this week. I have found the best principial when losing weight is the Paul McKenna way. I think about what whether I actual am hungry or just thristy and consciencly think about when I am full. It has worked wonders for me and I have eaten exactly what I want when I was hungry. However, this may all change now that I don't have my boy to muck out twice a day but hopefully I can carry on being a loser :D

Aw sorry to hear about your Lad, RIP Ollie. Good on you though for being such a good loser!! :)

I also lost a stone after xmas and one more to go on Slimming World. I think it matters not how you lose it, it matters that you do if you so wish to.

To OP, I definitely think it's the way a person carries themsleves on a horse that makes the biggest difference. Try and lift a friend off the floor when she's pretending to be a dead weight. Then try doing the same thing except this time she uses some of her muscles to get up herself.

A horse carrying a 'dead weight' finds it far harder to carry than someone who balances themselves according to the forces exerted by the horse.

Thanks hun! It the best thing I could have done for Ollie!

as for the dead weight comment, do you know I have never thought of it like that. But it really must be like carrying dead weight for them. :o

Chillebean - I know what your feeling, lost my wonderful Ginger last July and now i can smile and talk about her, sometimes i still get a tear to the eye and a lump in my throat.

For me weight loss is about attitude, i fanny about for ages trying to do something ie loose weigh - i have been trying to move this stone and a half for 5 years after i was crushed in a riding accident. All last year i would loose a pound and then put two back on and then one day i just woke up and said

"give it a month and see what you can do" I drink water, green tea, i treat myself with one cup of proper tea a day, no alcohol. I eat porridge with water and fruit for breakfast. A bowl of homemade soup and 3/4 apples during the day, a banna about 3 ish, and have a stir fry or a ham omlette and salad for tea my only treat is "cocconut milk, merrange basket and strawberrys" twice a week and on a Friday i have a cheese omlette and salad ! my fitness regime is pretty tough I am lucky to have a personal trainer 4 times a week - just for 30 mins and then 45 on a weekend and my workouts are mainly - press ups, lunges, squats and planks, its hard but getting easier - i am now upto a 16lbs loss at the end of my 6th week and i only have another 7lbs to go - hubby says ime not to loose anymore just to firm up !

Yes it is expensive but i have rationalised it is worth the money for a short period than to join a gym where you pay monthly and dont go or get dissapointing results. Have a phone round if your serious and get some prices in from trainers, maybe you and a friend or hubby can share a few sessions a week, or get a selection of fitness dvds and make yourself get fit - just like you would with a fat little pony after the summer ! - go on girls try it for a month - you may just find what you have been looking for health and confidence wise and my riding has improved tremedously as if i can now do press ups - proper ones I can sure as hell sit to Mr Schoolmaster when he does a Kevin and does not want to go past the killer pheasant hedge !

I'm tall and have a short pony. I'm not worried that he can't manage my weight at all but I think it would definitely benefit him, especially his schooling, if I lost 1 - 1.5 stones, also I think the key is the extra strength that exercise gives you. I need quite a lot of leg on my pony and my legs just aren't strong enough at the moment. I've only started this week (stepped on the scales and nearly had a heart attack) but it's probably the most successful healthy eating week I've ever had and I actually went running the other day! I have found that the pony is definitely the best motivation for not snacking and stuff - if I want some chocolate I just think about him and us looking good in the show ring in the summer and my nice tweed jacket and I find that nine times out of ten I actually don't want the snack anymore and actually feel a bit repulsed at the thought of eating it! Fingers crossed it continues. :)

I totally agree that it makes a difference. My great big strong horse doesn't seem to notice me but when I see lighter people riding him especially jumping then the whole picture looks happier. I would love to lose 2 stone right now and am thinking of going to weightwatchers but am too scared to get on the scales!

I would focus a bit less on the pure weight and more (as Gingerwitch alluded to) on core stability. I have seen horses go far better with bigger heavier people who have an independent seat and good stability. Sure if you are lighter you can get away with more in terms of balance but it is really a hand-in-hand kind of thing. If you exercise concentrating on improving your core you'll find it is one of the best calorie burning exercises in any case. However bear in mind if you decrease fat and increase muscle your actual weight may not change that much, but you will be stronger, fitter and be able to be more in balance with the horse. Also you will have far better tone so will drop dress sizes which is good too.

If anyone has an Iphone, I have a app called My Fitness Pal It was free. You get a set amount of calories that you have to stick too depending on your weight, age ect. I just write in what i've eaten and it finds the food and takes it off for you. I have been doing this for 6 weeks and i've lost 12 pounds so far. It really doesn't feel like a diet at all. It also tell you off if your not eating enough.

I just had a look for that app and you can sign up to it on your computer as well so you don't have to use an iphone. It looks really good - am going to try and use it for the next few weeks. Thanks jennifer83! :)

You can also put your exercise in and it gives you more calories. But I never do that because I don't count drinks unless milk based or alcohol.
