Sorry, Dizzy Again...

Mi Mrs M.....another vote for Spillers Slow Release Cubes....very high fibre/oil- minimal starch....has worked wonders on my lad with gaining weight/condition and on the plus side it doesnt send him loopy- he's not good with ANY ceral either.

FWIW....she doesnt actually look too bad at all to me.....just coming out of winter remember:)

More thank yous :D :D

I'm paranoid because this is what we went through last year, and as she has grown again there is every chance it will happen again :o :(

Starches have to be kept down as she gets nasty otherwise, and she's too damn big to be nasty, plus it doesn't suit her! (or me lol) :)

She's not keen on chaffs, but is okay with Redi-grass type things (not ecstatic, but okay);

She didn't used to like oily things, but seems to have developed a taste for Codlivine (whereas Little Cob, for whom the Codlavine was bought, hates the stuff! lol);

Anything too sloppy and it's a complete waste as the stable floor (and passing people, belongings, etc.) ends up wearing it :rolleyes:

She's better at eating when she's in work, but as she's still on field rest this week it's a bit of a drag. We're still on the sugarbeet and carrots, with now the addition of the Codlivine, which she is getting twice a day;

All the haylage she can eat!

I'm going to put a wee spreadsheet together of the feeds and ring the manufacturers. Last year she ended up on: Blue Chip Pro, Alpha A Oil, Bailey's Outshine, Bailey's No. 4, and sugarbeet - and it had no effect whatsoever :(

She won't go back into ridden work once this tweaked bit is over and done with. I'm going to Pessoa her five times a week, and throw D1 onto her twice a week (as D1 is a stick insect, especially compared to me) just to remind her of what a saddle is lol. Four weeks fo that and hopefully she will build up that wee bit of topline again. I will ride Little Cob and Friend has said I can ride Big Cob, so I should be heading back towards being riding fit again.

Ee, it's a thing this horse owning lark lol :D :D :D

I'll let you know what the feed people say :)

Feed wise Saracen ReLeve may be worth a try as it's DE is 13.1MJ/kg, starch is 8.5-12.5% & it's cereal free. I've never yet seen a horse pick at it & being a mix it'salso easier to hide extras in.

That was it! That was the other feed to go with the Equijewel :D

I've started a spreadsheet to compare all that has been suggested and everything that I can find :). I must, indeed, have a spreadsheet fetish.... :D

No help on the feed I'm afraid but I've just realised from looking at the third of those photos that my friend has just bought a male Dizzy! I don't have any pics of him that I can share but he really does look the same!

High fibre pony nuts - A&P Quiet cubes - they contain linseed as well so help with weight gain, mix with speedibeet doesn't have to be sloppy, alfalfa mixed in with it - not sloppy not to chaffy. A&P Fast Fibre - again mix in some readi grass/chaff/alfalfa - look at the Mollichaff range - lots of different fibre based feeds (all chaffs but with herbs etc included but not heavily molassed) - there are loads of fibre options - and of course ad lib hay/haylage.:)

Ditto SLinks, the mollichaff range have nice interesting chaffs - apple, cherry, veteran with lots of exciting minerals, thistle, smells etc, pack it into her - ad lib - Ali gets ad lib haylage, bucket of veteran mollichaff over night to munch on and three decent bulke feeds a day - the difference in him is night and day.

I know that lots of feeds have been suggested but quite often grass is the best thing for putting weight on difficult horses. You seem to have tried lots of feeds so i would definately seriously think about supplementing with grass (nuts or chaff).

The ulcer idea is also worth looking into too. One reason she may get difficult on starchy feeds is because they also tend to make ulcers worse. The energy in linseed mainly comes from oil, which shouldnt cause a problem and you only feed it by the cupful anyway.

I know youve just bought it but pink powder is just brewers yeast and vits/mins, not a very high spec of them either compared to other products. It would be more beneficial (and better economically) imo to carry on with the codlivine (as she eats it!) and add straight brewers yeast.

Muscle will only develop with work, which i know you cant do consistantly due to her on/off lameness. Conformationally she has a long loin and long pelvis, which also make it hard.

You really do have a challenging horse dont you? (((())))

Gawd. Head is swimming now :o

I picked up the Brewers Yeast today, but thought I was overloading it and adding too much :(.

Yup, the saddler said deep girth and long loin, but still likes her. Everyone who sees her move under saddle likes her. Everyone who has ridden her likes her. She does have something, apart from the fact that I just love her and I'll keep going 'till I find the right mix of whatever for her :).

As far as I remember, she hasn't been lame since before Christmas, which was a bang on a foreleg, and before that it was July-ish (I think), the rest of the time it's been me that's been wonky whilst she has been okay. But! Now D2 has learnt to lunge her and is happy handling her (and does both well), she can continue to be worked even when I'm not around/wonky :). We'll get there :D

Forgot to say: yes, grass definately works for her, but it didn't kick in until June-ish last year and you've seen the pictures of her leading up to that! :(. I'm trying to stop her ending up going the same way again :).
