Why does there seem to be so many numpty's about who have to treat there horses like children, buying them all the latest fashion, rugs, supplements, boots and general crap? Why can't people just let horses be horses? There are also so many problems with horses now days because of this, if you go back 40-50 years ago we hardly ever saw laminitis because horses were there for a purpose and they were not over fed and under worked. Cushings is another that seems more common now this is because when a horse came to the end of it's working life as a ridden, driving, ploughing, broodmare or whatever it was humanely put to sleep not given to a rescue centre because the owner didn't want the trouble or expence! Please people get some common sence and respect for your equines don't molly-coddle them and treat them like kids, I know you think that by giving them what YOU THINK they should have (lots of feed and supplements, lazy days in the lush field, days off 3 days a week!) you are being kind and loving but you are not you are killing them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLEASE STOP FLUFFING YOUR HORSES THEY COULD SURVIVE FINE WITHOUT YOU.

(plenty more to say but I'll shut up now thanks)

Have to say I don't entirely agree for a number of reasons!
What does the type of rug have to do with horse welfare?

also horses are able to compete at the highest level for much longer now... is this due to 'general crap'?

Know exactly what you mean commonsence.

clairel I think commonsence means all the training aids and stuff that are about now. I have to agree, what happened to good old fashioned riding and lunging, now there are training aids for everything and they don't always end up in the right hands. People talk about natural horsemanship now and how you can go on a course for it but it is not something you can be taught it is something that you learn from spending time and alot of time at that around all different types of equines.

I know what they mean but I think, generalising to the extent that rugs, boots and supplements are not beneficial to horses is idiotic!

There are of course a number of fads which are exactly that and I agree that there are some owners which go over the top, but perhaps we should all forget about progress and go back to living in caves and drilling holes in our heads to alleviate headaches?!

I like buying general crap (especially pink crap) and my horse doesn't have laminitis or cushings

I used to collect antique horse medicines from long ago and you wouldn't want to give your horse the stuff they used to give them 50+ years ago!

I like pink crap too

My horse is also healthy, but never ridden, she's only just turned 2

We have show horses and ours don't have rugs wear boots or have supplements, we don't use any modern gadgetry just proper feeding, good turn out, plenty of exercise and a proper groom daily, and they do very well on it. Not joining the band wagon just saying.

Ohhh yes please my GPA Speedair is soooo last season now!!

I'm glad you find horse health a joke, it is exactly you lot who i am talking about, playing at ponies like a character from a kids book. Thank you to the supportive and those who are trying to see where I am coming from, I posted on here as I knew there would be others who felt the same, I also new there would be others who would ridicule as I have a difference of opinion to them. Yes horse health supplements and gadgets have come a long way in the last few years I just don't see the need for alot of them, and might I add that niether do many of the TRUE horse people I have spoken to.
