Today when re doing my horses poultice for her hoof abcsess I syringed in hydrogen peroxide to the hole in the sole to give it a flush out after the constant poultice coming off issues. I was slightly alarmed that the peroxide fizz came out through the abcsess exit wound in her heel. It goes straight through from the hole in the sole and out the heel!?!
I am going to call the vet again in the morning but how alarmed should I be? This is the first abcsess I have dealt with and am finding it quite daunting.

Don't worry, that's good as it means that you can clean the whole track. :) Keep flushing until the peroxide pretty much stops fizzing (don't forget to dilute the peroxide).

Is the horse sound now?

Thank goodness for that, I have had awful thoughts of hoof falling off etc. Yes she is sound, she was from when the hole appeared in her heel from the abcsess coming out, she still had some heat and limited movement from the swelling this seems improved now. I have certainly learnt alot with this abcess, just hope it heals well. I have ordered a shires rubber poultice boot that looks like it will be good for turn out. I am going to have the farrier out to check it over to and hope he can tell me if its drained and how long to keep it covered etc.

My shires boot was a lifesaver for me last year when turning out. If you put cheap nappy on first it gives a really snug fit

Well, if she was mine, I'd stop poulticing, turn out and just clean the hole out twice a day (with the diluted peroxide, make sure it comes out the exit hole). After a few days, I'd progress to cleaning once a day, then a few days later go to every other day, then stop.

That would be so much easier than keeping dressings on. So it would be ok to leave the hole in the sole of the hoof uncovered if flushing with peroxide? I keep thinking if it was one of my children with a wound I would now be telling them it needs the air to get to it so it can heall, putting a plaster on will make it worse!
I know horses are different to human children though :)

I have one that is getting over an abcess now too, I've stopped poulticing this week and have been turning him out in hoof boot to keep it clean, he's out today without anything for the first time and I will just make sre I thoroughly clean it all out later. I've found the best thing sometimes is leave it open and keep them moving.

surely that depends how strong it is in the first place??

I know someone on here has reported the use of undiluted for thrush certainly didn't do the frogs any good.
