Sorry - Lorry or trailer question

I know this has been done to death, but need some advice please.

I have always had 7.5 tonne lorries and love them, but I now have only a small budget of about 2-3k.

I would have a lorry by choice, but they tend to give me grief around plating time, the last one was PG9'd (banned from driving it from VOSA and had my keys taken off me!) Couldn't get parts as it was too old, or would cost the world to fix.

So, do I go back to a x reg-c reg type age lorry for my budget (Ford cargo for example) and hope it isn't a death trap with a **** floor or go for a 510 trailer and a 4x4. I would get a Daihatsu fourtrak.

I will probably use it once a month, maybe more in summer, some months maybe not at all, so around 20 times say used a year.

Lorry insurance is £150 (I am old!)
Lorry tax £200 year
Plating (god only knows!)

4x4 insurance fully comp £250
4x4 tax £200 year
MOT - probably wont be as bad as VOSA plating!


Please help. If i had 6-10k I'd buy a decent lorry and Id choose a lorry everytime, but as I dont go to stay away shows or use it every week is it worth the stress of a 7.5t lorry???? By the way, the 4x4 would be for towing only, I have a normal everyday car too.

Personally - if you have an everyday car to use anyway, I would go for the lorry, rather than 4x4. In your budget I'm guessing you would have to buy a trailer, as well as the 4x4 - so if you are getting both - you still would have potentially the same problems with the floor in a trailer as you do with the lorry.

I think if you go into a lorry with your eyes wide open (and a trusted and experienced mechanic alongside) you could do ok. Don't be afraid of picking up mats and carpet and other cover ups to check the lorry out properly.

Is it possible to delay buying for a moment, and save some more money up?

i bought an old bedford tk, for a fair bit less than yr budget.. but.. i was so anal about it, i went through all previous paper work, invoices etc to see what it had had done, i then got my local horse box garage to come out and give it a once over.

its just had its mot and parts were 105 quid.. thats it. (and 900 for flipping labour grrrrr)

tax wise its cheaper than a car at £90 for 6 months

insurance was 400 for any driver fully comp, and full breakdown cover.

could you share with someone or hire one perhaps I would say your budget is a little low to get something safe and or reliable that will last and not cost a fortune to test..

I bought a 3.5t lorry for £4000 with service history and a really sound engine its perfect in every way and being 3.5t it has an MOT rather than plating

So there are good deals to be had out there.

Personally I'd always get a lorry over a trailer but if you already have a 4x4 it makes sense to get a trailer
