I am now going to make myself sound even more stupid.

Bearing in mind my father kept gundogs for years I really should know this

But what is the difference between a labrador and a labrador retriever?? I know what a retriever is, and assume a LR is therefore a cross? if so, does the KC allow x breeds??

Has anyone any photos?? In my quest to find a puppy I have come across many adverts, but as pups they seem to look just like normal labs...

Also, as it's late at night and too late to phone my father and ask him, do Bitches have a certain time of year when they can't breed? Ie they don't come into season? Would it be unreasonable to expect to be able to get hold of a puppy in sept / oct time?? also, how long is the gestation period? (just out of interest!! I'd like to know all the little things I don't know before purchasing a pup).

Be prepared for lots more daft questions LOL.

A Labrador and a Labrador retriever are the same thing

- no the KC doesnt allow cross-breeds to be registered with them.

Gestation period is 63 days for a bitch, and bitches usually come into season every six months - so you can get puppies all year round depending on when the bitch decides to come into season

For photos just think of the Andrex puppy, they all look like that

(well OK, they can come in black, chocolate or yellow, so varieties of that I suppose

ahh thanks for that!!

How stupid do i feel now LOL.

So, we're looking for a yellow lab, in about september time, if anyone knows of any....

I am sure this isn't actually a proven fact, but I have always found yellow labs to moult more than blacks (just thinking of your carpet

[/ QUOTE ] They are great dogs, but you have to be prepared to deal with quite a handful of a puppy. They do love to chew. A decent sized crate is a godsend for when you have to leave them in the house.

If you wait a year you can one of the pups I breed

I have a cracking little yellow bitch. She is a real pet. Although I would say both her and my black one moult the same! The yellow one is a bit more stupid though

My yellow lab seems to moult more than our old black one did.... In fact he sheds hair all year round! They are quite short hairs though so hoover up easily

I'm in leicestershire.

Moulting isnt an issue for me, as the dog would only be allowed downstairs (wooden flooring, leather sofas etc all purchased with kids and pets in mind), and we'll be having a big kennel and run built in the garden for when we're out.

Also just wanted to add, try and choose a puppy whose parents have been elbow scored as well as hips and eyes. It would seem that OCD/elbow dysplayia is becoming more common as hip displaysia is being bred out.

I have one with OCD in both elbows and it's really horrible. I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

oooh how exciting! We will need pics

Am thinking that you were thinking Golden Retriever when you though retriever and Labrador being different to them...

Anyway - would also 100% agree with Ravenwood about making sure you get one that comes from hip scored parents
smile.gif
You are looking for the lowest parental hip score you can get

Also bear in mind that working dogs look different to show dogs (labs) - mine is working bred and looks gorgeous
