Hope noone minds all my questions today, I'm having a doggy moment (it happens every now and again, Boss is rolling his eyes and wonders what i'm up to now!)... i fancy having a go at a couple of veteran fun classes, not expecting to win, would just like to get into it by starting at the bottom! Anyway, what is expected routine wise? What kind of collar/lead combination (got a black gundog sliplead, is that ok?), i presume there's no need to dress up at this level? Anything i should teach boss before we go?

If you are going to a breed show, then tracksuit and trainers with a strong grip won't offend anyone...and will be comfortable!
All-breed shows tend to be a bit smarter.

GSDS ideally should be shown with a long, thinnish leather lead (Mine are 1m and 2m long) the idea being to enable them to gait on a loose lead.
Collar wise, a large link brass or stainless steel choke chain in the 'dead' position or a half check in leather and chain is the norm.
However if it is a fun show/class, a slip should be fine.

I used to show in veteran, very laid back normally but nothing worse than putting your sprightly 11 year old with a broken leg up against a just-turned-seven Irish Champion who is still winning in the normal classes, grr! I am sure that will not happen :P

You will be expected to do one or two circuits of the ring
then come in for an individual (teeth check, balls check for boys, feel over by judge) then show him coming/going and one or two laps of the ring individually (or a small triangle if you are doing all-breed)
Veteran won't be too energetic.

If it is being done correctly the judge or steward will be giving you instructions on what to do.

By the way, I fear you are about to be bitten by the bug, be careful

Edited about five times as I kept forgetting things!

Ooh, so glad you mentioned the leather half check, I've been wanting to get one of those for ages but have been umming and ahhing because he has a perfectly good nylon half check and OH thinks I'm bonkers... now I have an excuse to buy one! Plus it's his birthday on the 17th, so a nice pressie for him (the dog, not OH). Quite excited now, I've always wanted to have a go, should have started when he was a bit younger but he is very tolerant of my whims and is still super sprightly.... if anyone knows of any good shows in lincolnshire, do let me know!

Oh and I'd get him used to walking around in a square or a small triangle to get him used to it before the big day.

If you want to show him in a breed class, try to get him to walk out in front, for all-breeds, he should have his head beside your knee. Keep him on your left and go in an anti-clockwise direction.
Maybe put four chairs out in the garden as your 'corners'?

H-H has said it all really, just wanted to say good luck if you do take him to a show and remember no matter where the judge places him, you will always be taking the best dog home with you

Oh, you perhaps should teach him to show his teeth, do this by very gently lifting his lips at the side and at the front to show his bite. Make sure you don't cover his nose/nostrils or he will probably object .

OH took his 14 year old Springer into (both of theirs!) first ever dog show a few years ago, and won the Veteran and was Reserve Best in Show, go and have some fun, family dog shows are normally about £1 per class so you enter loads without breaking the bank!
