Ok.. lazy ponio works well in a new bit for a time then learns how to evade! He is a bit of a leaner too - or will turn his head sideways to avoid the contact. When he's in a good mood he does like quite a stong contact but I think that might be so that he can take advantage and lean! Have tried a loose ring french link, copper snaffle, hanging cheek french link and now jointed loose ring snaffle. The last bit was the most effective for a while but now he has learnt to stick his head up to avoid me!

For hunting/showing he wears a pelham and seems to really work well and has a lot of 'lipstick'. However obv I don't want to be riding a non strong horse in a pelham all the time. Would it be worth trying a straightbar snaffle? Tack shop suggested happy mouth straightbar.....

if he leans, he'll lean more in a straightbar or happy mouth imho.
i'd make sure his teeth were 100%, tilting head is a classic sign.
i'd prob try a full cheek myler with 02 comfort snaffle mouthpiece, or a full cheek kk with lozenge, they're my "magic" bits, with a looseish drop noseband.

Oh I didn't mean strong contact like a harsh contact - I just mean he likes a firmer contact (I've been told my hands are too light and I give him too many rewards by not closing my fingers around the reins enough somethimes).

Ya need a dressage legal bit as we like to do prelims.

The myler sounds like a fab suggestion - just on their website now.

You could try a waterford loose ring snaffle. My TB used to grab the bit and lean on one side to try to pull it (he's an ex racer so was taught to run into the bit) but the waterford doesn't allow them to do this as it collapses. Its also quite a nice bit as long as you have kind hands.

Pelhams are for flatwork too, thier just a less precise version of a double bridle. Thier not just for brakes.

I get it now if you want dressage legal! Sorry if i sound snotty just come accros too many people who are in the "My horse must go in a snaffle at all times or its the end of the world" club! Snaffles are the ideal not the essential.
