sorry for this my sisters oh was in a car accident last tuesday, he hit a van doing 40mph, any way he went to hospital and they said he had whiplash by thursday he was in so much pain so went back to the hospital. He found out he has broke his back, mri and cat scans later they said he needed a op so he was sent to john radclife, he has been in the having the op since ten thirty this morning and still not out. My sister is so worrried is this normal, has anyone had a broken back and what happened. I hope this makes sense as i am doing this on my phone. Finally please can you send vibes to my sister and her oh stu many thanks

I broke my back 4 months ago and had a rod and pins put in over T12. i went to theatre at 2.30pm and wasnt back on the ward until about 9.30-10pm, so it is a long op. I wish you all well. x

My neighbour had a rod and pins put into her back a few months ago, she was expected to be theatre for 5 hours and actually didn't come out for nearer to 6 hrs. Sending lots of <<vibes>>

Try not to worry, it may well be he is out of theatre and waiting in recovery for porters and a nurse to bring him back to the ward. I am a porter in a hospital and this time of night there are very few working, and prob only minimal recovery staff.

((hugs))
My OH ( dad_io on here) broke his back last year- 29th May so just past the first "anniversary" He smashed L2 and broke the wing off L1 plus 3 discs were damaged along with an anvil injury to the spinal cord causing loss of feeling down his right leg. He was in Royal Berks as they decided he was too unstable to be moved :( He was in theatre for 5 1/2 hours BUT was then kept in the recovery/intensive care ward for another 3 hours as they wanted to bring him round VERY slowly. He was very disorientated at first. He was fitted with rods and screws and they tidied the soft tissue damage, he was in hospital for 5 weeks in total then he wore a brace for another 2 months- if your OH gets rubs then i can make you some fleece covers which really helped my OH.

Recovery was slow but steady. I can massively recommend the Osteocare plus supplement (Boots)as the calcium/soy really helped him lay down new bone and we are all convinced helped him avoid a bone graft. If he is on morphine/tramadol then force feed him loads of prunes and activia yoghurt as otherwise its INCREDIBLY painful in the bowels..

Sadly the NHS decided he didnt need physio  so we pay for him to go and thats really helped too. We also do Pilates. He started riding again back in March and has purchased a proper "mans" fit BP and a P2 jacket!

At his checkup last week they have agreed to operate to remove the rods as its healed so well. His mobilty is improving all the time and we are looking forwards to autumn hunting :)

Is it McKenna operating?

thanks for the vibes, it was worse than they thought which is why it took so long. Stu is very sleepy still, but my sister has been with him most of the day, he has plates and rods and has a body frame thing. He will be coming home in a week. I am not sure if that is back to our hospital or home. Thank you all again once i know so more i will let you all know x
