sorry not really horsey, amitriptyline?????

I suffer from migraines with neurological symptoms (shooting nerve pain) and take it. I take 10mg at night before bed and it keeps the pain away (think almost crashed my car once when I had an episode of the nerve pain!). I was supposed to increase to 20mg but couldn't tolerate it. The main effect it has on me is severe drowsiness in the mornings. I'm only small though so dr said I might not tolerate it too well! I've found if I take it earlier in the evening ie 7pm instead if right before going to bed that I'm ok in the mornings, it seems the extra few hours helps (although not if I'm expected to stay up late!!).

The only other irritating side effect is my friend who always asks if I'm still on my antidepressants...... Grrr!!

I take 15 tablets at bed time alone for chronic pain/suspected fibro (plus thyroxine)..

This includes 2 codeine, 2 strong diclofenac, 3/4 tramadol, setraline, pregabalin and duloxetine.. (plus my thyroid meds)..

This is the only thing (GP sanctioned) that enables me to get out of bed in the mornings.. I forgot them last night and I'm suffering)..

Anyway, I was put on amitryptiline a few months ago to see if it helped.. It gave me night terrors when I could sleep.. Didn't agree with me at all.. I can still see and smell what went on clearly when normally I remember nothing of dreams or nightmares..

I know several people it doesn't agree with but there's nothing wrong with trying it.. It should manifest any side effects pretty quickly.. My GP said if anything like that happened, stop taking them straight away and make another appointment..

I would give it a go, it does amazing things for many people in a good way..

Do you find that the pregabalin and/or duloxetine help with feeling 'refreshed' when you wake up in the morning? I've been classified as having 'severe fatigue' plus with other injuries that I've clocked in my life, am on amitriptyline, however given the severe fatigue (tbh other than the almost immediate sedation effects of amitriptyline, not sure it affects me all that much as I've reduced the dose and come off it for a few months before being put back on it and had the dose upped for pain).

Quick update on the pain clinic - I am encouraged! I know I'm lucky because they have a good reputation, but the talk was all about how to manage and reduce pain without building a reliance on drugs. Starting with some cream to apply, and also going to trial a TENS machine. They will review and look into things like acupuncture and Alexander training. Fingers crossed because I would like to be able to do some self-management with this.

I can fall straight out of bed on this lot, slightly hobble to the utility room for my wellies and by the time I've got them on I am fully awake, and walked half of the 100m to my stables I'm not hobbling any more either..

I do get a bit drowsy in the half hour between taking them and going to bed and as soon as I put my head down I tend to be asleep in minutes but no morning issues personally..

Without, I'm next to useless and I'm nigh on crippled all over and completely exhausted without them..

Stroppy - that last one was for you (can't quote on iPhone)..

Tinyp - very encouraging! Good news :)

Thanks, I think I just might speak to the doctor when I see them next (next month) and get them to look at prescribing something. I'd read that pregabalin helped with it, but I'd never heard of the other drug until today so I can go prepared with something else too. :)

I took up to 30 mg for sleep purposes, and I got used to early morning fog etc but I have never eaten and craved sugar so much in my life. I am not usually someone who puts on weight when listed as the side effects of a drug but my binging on chocolate was ferocious. Tailed off when i stopped the drug.

I take 30mg a night for migraines along with 50mg of topiramate morning and night. All i can say about it is be prepared for some nasty dreams. I have learnt to cope with them but i have never had a full nights sleep in the 8 years i have been on them, but they help with the migraines so i put up with it but wish i could sleep without waking up several times a night. Also they increased my appetite so i put on weight aswell :(.

I've had it before for sleeping problems. I took if pretty successfully for a couple of weeks then it stopped working for me, but I didn't have any side effects. Hope it helps you....

I take these regularly for migraines :)

Just make sure you eat before taking them or you'll be off to dance with the Unicorns in the clouds drooling with a droppy face ;)
