Clipped my boy the other day in a blanket clip (a rather short one too!) and clipped his mass of feathers off too. He's a heavy Cob buy currently only in a lw rug. Personally I think he needs a bit more but mum thinks he'll be ok and she doesn't want to rug him that much because he won't feel the benefit when it gets really cold.
What should we do?
Oh and were in Shropshire :)

If he's not feeling the cold just now then I would leave him in a LW.
Remember, you have to rug for individual horse and what he feels and not because you feel sorry for him :)

I'd rather start off as light as possible and know that you can put a slightly heavier one on if he does start to feel the cold. It's still mild (here anyway).
If you go up your rugs too fast, too early, then when bad weather does hit, you'll have nothing cosier to put him in and he won;t get the full benefit of it.

Personally i would use something with some fill (no more than 100-200g at the moment)
Lightweights are just rain sheets really & won't do much to keep him warm.

If he's cold your clip will grow back sooner rather than later and you'll have to start again!

I'd be tempted to put him in something heavier overnight than a rainsheet and then maybe a rainsheet in the day. Does depend on whether he is a hot horse generally or not though. Check his armpits and ears to see how he feels and go from there.

Depends how good he is at keeping warm really! I clipped my boy a couple of weeks ago (I'm shropshire too) and he's still in a lightweight with neck, he doesn't seem to get cold in it - if its chilly i add a fleece underneath (frosty mornings & overnight) but its still quite mild during the day & the sun is technically out, so he's fine in what he's wearing atm. I don't want to put a warmer one on him until he needs it because it got to -25 last year and I don't want him to be too wrapped up yet!! (hope that made sense...!)
saying this, i'm about to clip my mum's horse and he feels the cold more than mine, so i'll be putting a 100g one on him.
