Having expected my usual fortnightly feed delivery this morning, I was upset to get a call very early to say the lorry is off the road and so I won't be able to get my horse feed delivered until Wednesday (probably). I knew I only had enough of some of the horses feed to get me through to breakfast tomorrow, so being as it was my day off work today (self employed mobile catering unit) and the fact I had vowed I wasn't going to leave the yard today, I duly had to get the car out and drive to the local feed merchant. So having started the day knowing that my usual feed wouldn't be delivered, then knowing that somehow or other I would have to shoot home from work on Wednesday to unlock gates to get the feed lorry in, and then having to drive in the snow and ice to buy some today, (and a lot more money than I usually pay for it), I then had the lovely misfortune to hit a patch of ice and ended up spinning and spinning for a couple of hundreds yards down the yard and down a ditch! It is a road I know very well and hate having to use it so my speed wasn't even registering in the speedo (and in a four wheel drive). Thankfully was close to home and rang my farmer neighbour to ask him to pull me out. Car dragged back out and looking a mess - the bonnet is over the other side of the car to start with and a terrible smell of something burning. So the car is now sitting out on the drive waiting for the garage to come collect it. I naturally have to pay the excess on my car insurance along with the fact that the car now has to wait 5 days minimum for insurance assessor to come out. Can't get a courtesy car because I need a big car to tow catering trailer, so I now can't work so no money coming in, and can't get down to Tatts tomorrow where I've arranged to meet people, or get to the hospital for an appointment I had. And all because of my horses feed!

Safe driving everyone - don't go out unless you really have to.

Still, very scary for you. I also ditched my car once. It was last summer in a downpour and ended up being towed out backwards.

Do hope all goes well on Weds and with insurance people! Just what you don't need eh???

Poor you, and although in no way a wimp, agree that we should only be driving if really necessary.

We live up single track farm lanes, on a steep hill, and nearly had another 4 x 4 take me out yesterday - we were both going very slow, but depspite his grabber tyres, hit ice coming down the hill towards me and just couldn't stop. The driver had to turn his truck into a hedge so that he didn't hit me head on.

Getting fed up of this now and still only November....!

Oh no, that is not a good day :-(

If the weather continues like this, hopefully the UK will adjust eventually - the councils need proper machinery for promptly clearing the roads of snow, the cars need all season tires etc. etc.

i did this last year in the ice, crawling down a hill, hit ice and got quicker and quicker till i hit the wall at the bottom. I was only on the road cos the trainer decided to run some horses at wolverhampton to give them some exercise. I wrote my car off (and very nearly me too) for bl***y wolverhampton!!!!!
