We're looking for a new eventer at the moment.

Been to see this horse. First viewing was absolute nightmare, horse was half dead. Owner insisted horse usually better.

Went a second time, totally different. Ride went really well and my OH (who the horse is for) loved him. Definitely considering buying him.

Spoke to his instructor who wants to see him and also over xc jumps. Now owner saying we can't see him because we've seen him twice and she doesn't want instructors coming?!?!

Does this sound as odd to you as it does me?
 
Honestly, sounds very odd!! If I was a seller I wouldnt mind people coming a few times & bringing instructor - I think go with gut feeling & leave well alone....sorry! xx

Not necessarily. She may think you are joy riders. I must admit that I would get fed up if a person wanted to view a horse more than twice. However, it could mean that there is a problem with the horse too. It's so hard to tell with these things. If you are unable to view him with your instructor then I would start to look for another horse.
 
Normally we wouldn't view more than twice bur because the horse was such a dud first time round think it's important to check!!
 
Leave well alone....get back on the net and look for something else.

Any genuine owner would want to make sure the sale was right for both horse and pot new owner, the fact she doesn't want instructor to come and see him suggests to me that she thinks they might see something you haven't.

If the horse had been off colour for the first viewing then I would be happy the people had come back and not just discounted him and I would expect them to proceed with caution. I would discount the first visit if the horse wasn't himself, so in effect I would count it as one usual visit to acertain that you are interested in the horse, and another visit to check out the horses capability for the job intended and have the instructor see - prefectly reasnoble I would have thought. Though I must admit if it was me I wouldn't haev gone back after the first bad viewing!!!
 
Sounds like seller is trying to put you off the horse.

I would think it odd if she didn't want instructors to view the horse but think the more likely reason is she didn't like the way your OH rode or is holding out for a different home.

Up to them really how they want to sell their horse and who to.
 
If they are serious about finding him a good home then why would they object? Sounds odd to me. Buying a horse is a big responsibility, surely the fact you wanted your instructor along says you are a serious buyer, not a joyrider. I think there's something fishy here from what you've posted.
 
It does sounds a bit odd but what can you do? As someone else said, I guess its up to them but seems a shame when you like him.
 
I think she's putting us off because our instructor might see something we haven't. We are worried about his soundness as he keeps falling over his front feet and his back legs are a bit funny-but we would get him vetted. Maybe she thinks that our instructor will say absolutely not.

But it's odd cos I sure as hell am not going to buy him now without seeing him with our instructor!!

I would be very suspicious as to why it seemed dead on first viewing as well.

Was there water in the stable?
Did you offer water after the ride ?

Any signs of it having been given something to quieten it?
 
I don't think it was anything like that, just everything was wrong, she decide not to wear spurs when he normally does, and it was just like riding a kick along donkey, barely moving. We did jump it and it perked up so think he was just being a lazy sod.

The more I write the more I'm thinking why are we even considering him?!
 
Doesn't sound worth the risk to me. To be fair you gave them a chance when it was acting like a donkey - even if they were a bit peeved at having another viewing - decency would dictate that you'd need one after it being so switched off the first time round.
I'd smell a rat too Cedars ;)

It could be as simple as he had been viewed by someone else earlier in the day, or the previous day. Being tried by lots of strangers who want to jump the horse and put it through its paces is extremely exhausting for a horse.
 
Walk away! If they have nothing to hide they should let you go back for third time.

I had a similar exp, went to see a Horse, liked her. Owner rode her and Horse put in a dirty stop going into canter and the owner fell off. Was a shame because I really really liked her. Owner said I could go up as many times as I wanted as obv I was now not sure.

I went up another 2 times and bought her. 9 weeks on she has never done that at all!
 
Very strange and should really set off alarm bells. As has been said, a fair vendor should do most things to help find it a good home you'd hope!

You could always get your instructor to ring up and book to go and see it as if she was a buyer and then they'd see/ride it and be able to report back. Did they give a reason why the instructor couldn't come?

It could have been lethargic over the last week as its been very hot - there have been a few posts on here about horses not being themselves - thats ok to over look (as long as you have vetting and bloods taken) but the vendor's behaviour is iffy. As someone said, it could just be an excuse if she hasn't taken to your OH on the horse.
