Sounding horn when overtaking

EDIT: I misunderstood the report that I was reading, see comments section.

Will keep post up as evidence of my lack of proof reading and to give you all a good laugh that I'd believed this to be true ?

******

So, I have just been looking through the highway code rules for work purposes and noticed that there is a clause stating that electric car drivers have to sound their horn when overtaking horses so that the rider is aware of their presence?!

This seems absolutely mad to me, if we consider that drivers are also asked to pass wide and slow, (in part) to avoid startling a bloody prey animal that is prone to spooking.

If I was riding on the road and someone beeped their horn from behind me, I wouldn't blame my loan mare if she spooked!

Does this seem crazy to anyone else or just me? Apologies if this has already been discussed and I've been living under a rock ?

Definitely crazy.

Apparently theres a button on electronic cars that can make them emit a noise when they’re under 30mph. Not sure how true that is though.

Okay, I've completely misread this report!

Very embarrassing edit from me, but I was reading through a survey from AA Accident Assist and saw this mentioned in the "list of highway code rules" - but I had conveniently missed the smallprint that stated only the first five rules were actually true ??‍♀️

Ignore me, very pleased to hear that this is not true!! However, some of the highway code decisions do seem so ludicrous that it really didn't seem like an impossibility that they'd have implemented this haha.

Although…. Isnt it a bit scary with electric cars now , we cant hear them coming up behind us ?

Very true! I've not had an electric car whiz past me yet, but I do wonder how pony would react as they're so quiet. She's great on the roads but really doesn't like unexpected noises (what horse does I suppose!)

The scary thing is how many electric car drivers might read this, come to the same conclusion and start tooting?

One of my first hacks with my 5yr old pony I had a car go past and beep its horn. Thank goodness she was a steady mare and didn't miss a step.

I met one came from behind silently then as it had slowed down the noisemaker came on as it was next to me. It must have been faulty because it sounded like a tin of stones being rattled and both myself and pony jumped at it.

I hope this is true. Haven't been affected with horses but have nearly been knocked down a couple of times because I couldn't hear them coming - think if this isn't a thing it should be for residential areas!

Well, according to this report (when I actually read it properly ??‍♀️) I learned that 27 percent of drivers in the UK do indeed believe this to be true! Very scary indeed.

Oh yess!!! PLEASE DO NOT TOOT ?

We had a spectacular road spook not long ago due to a bus driver and his air breaks. Was a couple of seconds of terror for both of us, so I dread to think what an unexpected horn would be like. My poor nerves can't go through that again and I fear neither can pony's haha

Best spook on the road I had was a log lorry coming towards us round a corner, he literally hit the brake so hard and bb screeched to a halt too, spun in the middle and stamped his hoof! To be fair the driver reversed up the road a bit as he was in the middle of it, and then I trotted toward him and passed ?

Oh my goodness! They do love to be dramatic about it all, don't they ?

The electric buses in Paris, at least the ones at the top of Montmartre, have for over fifteen years had a recording of a little bell playing "ting, ting, ting" to warn oblivious tourists to get off the road and out of the way.

I could get on board with a gentle "ting, ting, ting" noise tbh!

No pun intended ?

On board the pony or the bus ???

A year ago , i tried to get on board in silence but there was a bt guy up a pole! I shouted on him and said , dont move, dont speak and dont bang ? what did he do ? Slipped and fell ?
BB went up, I wasnt quite on so I jumped to the side, but my reins tangled on my middle finger…. Snapped it completely ? went green and black in seconds ?
