am I a rare person in that I've got a horse that is my 'baby' and second horse that is there to do a job?

So first horse is literally first horse, had her 8 years now and she's very special. Recently been declared 'broken' in terms of can only do light hacking at best. But that doesn't matter, she can just be a big pet if needs be! :p

The second one has been bought and has taken over in terms of being a competition horse eventually (she's 4 at the moment) so she has the 'job' of being schooled on and eventually, as I said, competing for me. If she couldn't do the job she'd need to be replaced with something that could. 'Replaced' sounds harsh but I can't think of a better word! Sorry ..

Anyone else? *waits to get shot down/called cruel etc*

Totally with you....

My original cob is my 'best friend' horse and have had him for 6 yrs and will have him for life. I bought him to hunt and although he is good at the job, he is not the bravest jumper, so bought another to take on the bigger jumping days.

The other cob is awesome to ride but I am not as attached to him, and he is there to do a 'job'. However as he is so genuine my 11yr old son rides him when not at school, and he loves him to bits which makes me feel less guilty!

Yes! I love Cookie to bits, but he's there to keep Ned company. He gets the exact same care that Ned does, but if friend asked for him back tomorrow, I would say "Give me a week to find a new pony"

I do hope to give him a job when the weather picks up. As I said, I love Cookie, but there are no words to describe how I feel about Ned!

My *baby* can do no wrong. I compete him and hunt him but I couldn't care less how well he performs. I love him too much.

My other horses have a job to perform. If they can't work for me, they can go find another employer. Of course I keep every horse for its well deserved retirement ...

Yep. Spike the Spare is an absolute darling, and I'm very fond of him, but Alf is my "special" horse.

Doesn't mean that Spike gets treated any differently - i called the vet for him yesterday just as fast as i would have done if it had been Alf, and he gets plenty of attention/love, but I don't feel quite the same about him as i do about Alf.

I kept Flame as a pet for over 15 years during which time I went through 5 subsequent riding horses alongside. The others all came on the terms that if they weren't doing the job they had to go one way or another. Now Flame's gone if current riding horse keeps doing his stuff well until his late teens he'll be a pet, he's more cuddly pony than performance horse unlike the others anyway, but I'd pts rather than retire him if he went badly wrong much younger than that, I've just hardened up to being realistic about useless young horses.

Ah, I'm glad there are others who understand then! My 'baby' is spoilt and gets away with murder to be honest...I treat the other much more strictly now I think about it!

Of course I keep every horse for its well deserved retirement ...

Yes I meant to add that say I had her as long as my current mare (so she'd be 12 then and hopefully still competing!) I'd keep her on and give her a nice retirement after doing her job.

Can't love 'em all as intensely as some...and the ones you love might not be up to the job you want to do? I've got one comfirmed special ox (avatar) and two trainee specials who are showing promise but still on probation. Then there's the two that are there to do a job and that's as far as it goes.

I've got four, 2 are my babies and 2 as awful as it sounds, I don't really care for. They're my mums pets now and I wouldn't be fussed if she sold them.

The other 2 are my babies. 1 is defo staying for life as he's 16 now and when he retires he deserves nothing more. The other is a very talented 4yo and she does have a job to do. I do think if she won't do it for some reason or if I HAD to for other reasons, she would be sold despite being my baby as she is young and quite valuable
