Looking for articles / videos / recommendations for sources of info on literally how to sit on a horse. I've come to the conclusion that after about 20 years of riding I basically have no idea what I'm doing! I really struggle to sit still and my legs and arms appear to have a life of their own. I also find im not quite losing my stirrups but they are very loose on my feet and move around / nearly lose them. And I think I grip with my knees.... ??

I think some of this is due to having quite long legs and not the tallest horse, plus my horse is quite slow ? so I've got into some bad habits. But after some boot camp she is much more forwards and I need to really sort myself out to keep up!!

I want to understand more about how im supposed to be sat, for example, i watch people ride and their knees seem to point forwards and their toes in....my knees don't seem to point that way..?‍♀️?‍♀️ and i understand its all about the core and muscles around my seat etc and I need to do about 300 years of pilates but I really could do with understanding what I'm trying to achieve if that makes sense?

So any recommendations for stuff I can read that might make me understand how it all works. Thank you ?

I think it's the Learning to Ride as an Adult book that has exercises with gym balls and resistance bands to help develop core/position etc so that might help too

If you're long legged and horse is short backed it might be your saddle causing you position issues. It might not be allowing you to sit correctly

There was another book named something like back to back riding about how the riders spine and horses spine affect the other. I think ? it's been a long time since I read it. It had some light bulb moments about positioning (it might have been the dvd to accompany it)

A lot of it is just putting the hours in (with a good trainer so you know what correct feels like) to develop your feel further. Not helpful I know ?

Sally Swift (Centred Riding) too, her writing/descriptions have been a breakthrough for some people too.

If you search her name on here it might being up some of the previous threads about her writing.

Thanks guys. Have watched some mary wanlass on YouTube and have ordered her book as well which should arrive tomorrow. Also found a podcast which looks good. I think I need to re-learn how to do rising trot using my thighs from what I've read!!

Rising trot with no stirrups will sort that for you!

Some of our instructors (though not my regular, it's only those who replace him when he has a day off) have us doing that...

Circles with the inside leg pushing to widen the circle, stirrupless, is guaranteed to give me cramp in my calf. I must be doing it wrong.
