Sourcing low sugar hay

I will be needing to source the lowest sugar hay for my highland when I move to the midlands in the summer. How do you source low sugar hay when you’re new to an area?

Are you moving to a yard? If so the starting point would be getting the hay they supply tested (if they haven't already). Or whoever supplies them and then get in touch with that supplier to see what they have that's tested.
I personally have found it really hard to source consistent hay so moved to low calorie haylage that is supplied nationally.

If you can stomach the cost you buy a branded bagged forage.

Does he have issues with soaked hay, that would be easiest.?

He can have soaked. It depends on whether I can have him at home or not.

I've tested hay year on year about 7 years and from various suppliers. I've never found meadow hay in the South East that's has had more than 10% ESC and Sugar mostly it's been abouy 5-6%. Has been a problem sourcing low iron/ manganese

I’d have a look on local facebook groups as a lot of people advertise/know someone on there.

Low sugar bagged haylage at first - not cheap but will tide you over. Then ask around on local Facebook groups.
