has anyone fed soya bean meal for weight gain? have noticed that its a major ingredient in a lot of the conditioning feeds and wondered if it was possible to feed it as a straight and if so how much and does it require soaking?

Hi there. I've been told that you must make sure that the protein content isn't too high. I think 20-25% is maximum that is good for horses. Our feed merchant was selling full fat soya meal and the protein content was 45%!

I've just put my boy on Baileys No.1 to up his calorie intake. It's meant to be brilliant for weight gain.

I used to feed it to my old TB.
He used to have a couple of mugfuls a day, it has to be soaked and you have to feed limestone flour with it
Its very good

Another one to try is copra, its crushed up cocconut shell, you also have to soak this, it really soaks up the water and is very high in oil and fibre, this is what i use now, its smells lovely too

Is basically like weetabix for horses - good stuff but do be careful because it is very high in protein

Also good for weight gain is Fibre beet which IMO is easier & horses love it.
