Hi everybody

Basically I've just started adding soya oil to my boys feeds after somebody told me it's a good way of getting a bit more energy without concentrated foods and more feed. (He's a fatty, so only gets some chaff with his vits etc.)

Has anybody had experience of feeding soya oil for extra 'Oomph!'?

He was a lot better schooling today but I don't know if it's the oil kicking in or not! :)

Thanks in advance!

Unfortunately it won't give him more ooomph! Oils are slow release and for horses that require a lot of stamina such as endurance horses. It is more likely to increase his weight if he is a quiet horse.

Adding oats to his feed is more likely to increase energy levels as is getting the extra weight off him and getting him fitter.

Soy products are best not fed to horses as soy has been shown to encourage metabolic problems.

Ah, thank you for that.

With so many people giving you advice you never know what's right! haha.

Okay then great. I don't want to turn him into a mental patient though, :p he's currently working 6 days a week now, about half an hour to an hour a day. So it's not like he's not in work. And he's lost tonnes of weight, he's not grossly overweight anymore, it's his working mindset, but he is getting better :)

You need to be looking at 1 - 1½hrs steady trotting a day to get him fit. You should finf that he will perk up as he gets fitter.

you could try a light balancer - I'm giving Shy one mug a day of Spillers Lite, and he really has perked up, and he's in fab condition. He's on quite a strict regime of stabling during the day, then being ridden or loose schooled, and then out at night, often with his muzzle. He has stayed at exactly the same weight for the last 4 months too.

Hope that helps
