I have been using Soya oil in Flys feed for a couple of months now and really think it has improved his coat and way of going. Just wondered if anyone else has used it and noticed any improvements both physically and work wise? It says that it gives extra energy but is non heating and this does seem to be true in my boys case.

Hi, we have an ex-show jumper with epsm. Soya oil is recommended for his condition, shivers, stringhalt etc also for competition horses. They burn the energy from the oil which prevents muscle damage. It is great for all horses. You have it exactly right. They can get overweight but if in a lot of work it normally balances out. We use it on all our horses in work.

Thanks for that Silver_Florin. I better stop giving it to my youngster then as he is a good doer to put it mildly! Fly is in full work and jumps/competes once a week. I have noticed he has muscled up and although I do have to watch his weight carefully, so far so good. xx

Just reading up on fat-supplemented diets for an assignment. Apparently oil (such as soya or veg) and rice bran are commonly used in endurance horse diets, it helps the horse to get the fatty acids out of the food and to use them as an energy source, which stops them having to use up their glucose supplies during low-intensity exercise. Thus it gives them more energy without overloading their small intestines with starch which can happen when feeding oats in large quantities(which can apparently lead to un-digested starch being fermented in the hindgut). Starch is also obviously linked to ERS (azoturia/tying up) so oils are a good substitute for cereals when you need to give the horse more energy.
I am bored so haven't taken in much of this info *yawn*
I also feel I should reference this like a good student... (Geor & Harris, 2005)

I give B a cup full of the Soya Oil from Tesco every day. I have been feeding it since mid winter and he has gained so much condition (not just due to Soya Oil but im sure its helped). His summer coat has come through much shinier than last year and over the winter he was shiney and his skin seems to have improved too as it was quite dry and dandruffy last winter.

I am not sure if his energy levels have changed as he is given barley and cereal aswell which were introduced approx the same time as the soya oil.

I have been trying to find the info for three people, all ties in with this. I have so much paperwork it tends to get messed up when i am looking for something. Cannot remember all the details off the top of my head. I did a lot of research into shivers. The same diet for shivers cases is recommended for competition horses - protects their muscles. Beth Valentine in America researches it and she wrote a magazine article on our behalf. When i find it i will post it. I buy soya oil from Tesco. Rocky was on the point of being pts. He is now back in work. Its realy fascinateing what oil does combined with a low starch diet. Our little pony is on the diet and his showjumping improved immensly.

I feed it to all mine. Seems to keep their coats good. But if Im honest, I cant say if it makes a huge difference because Ive fed it as standard for ages. I get mine from my local farm shop. They have a huge tank full of it, so I just take my own bottles and they fill them up. Cheaper than any shop bought.
