I am now placing a large order of feed oil etc as I have it delivered out to France. I am using AP Calm & Conditioning and Equus Health Winter glow Summer shine and have been adding in 1/2 a cup of Soya Oil.
I use 2.5kg of the AP mixed with water spread over the day.
1/2 cup of oil in the morning over the feed.
WG SS mid day with feed.
He has fresh alfalfa ( not cubes ) and hay mix of an evening add lib.

Which is better soya or linseed oil ? I have never used linseed but have read positive things also the linseed oil is more than double the price of soya.

I feed straights but if I was going to feed mixes I would always try to get soya free and would never feed soya oil so would have to be linseed for me

Linseed - and micronised rather than oil if possible

This ^ I started feeding micronised linseed to a very poor doer who was embarrassingly thin despite having masses of high quality forage. Worked really well for her without heating her up. Although it's costly to buy it's worked out more economic as she just has this, chaff and a supplement now and it's easier to adjust relative quantities according to work load and condition than with the mixes and nuts I tried before.

I believe that some horses in varying degrees are intolerant to it.

I think (or maybe dreamt it!) I read somewhere that it shouldn't really be fed as they would never eat it in the wild and therefore are not able to process it properly. That said a lot of food and supplements (ground soya husks are often added as a bulking agent) have soya in them. But then that's one of the reasons I use Simple Systems feeds as they are molassess and soya free. :D

Micronised linseed :D:D. I give it to all of mine and the difference after a month or so is incredible. Even on the coats of the grey's. I first heard of it when talking to the owner of a dapple grey shire at a show. His coat was like a mirror, amazing shine which I thought was down to grooming and products. Nope, it was all credit to ML. :)
20kg from Charnwood milling lasts ages.

Having tried both routes i can say that micro linseed is far far far far better, kept weight on (and added some) to my difficult to manage TB

On top of the weight gain, Linseed has a better ratio Omega Oils 3 to 6 than Soya oil and Omega 3 has added benefits beyond the weight gain in terms of joints, allergies and a whole host of other benefits.

Linseed. I feed this and fibre cubes with unmolassed sugarbeet and my mare looks fab on it. I can increase the volumes as and when required for condition. It is also fantastic for digestion, joints and coat shine!!
