I know you are all probably bored with the horsebox posts now but i have been talking to a friend today who is also looking for a box. She has two horses approx 16.2hh each. If she were to travel both together what dimensions horse area wise would she realistically need??

i.e. how wide would it need to be for two and what length if you can include the horses head in any dimensions please!!! ( i know some boxes horses have their heads over lockers or walls but if we can just include all space needed!!! )

Thankies

You need a 3.5 tonn lorry with the same space as an ifor 510 or the rice beaufort sixty- if you look on their web sites they give headroom etc.

I've got a 3.5 ton which is this size; they travel backwards with heads over benches/ lockers, with a jockey door on the rear wall. I'd be cautious of the payload though if she wants to travel both horses together; mine is 1200kg, but I only travel 1 horse. Mine came from highwood horsebaxes in Wakefield, and I'm really pleased with it.

She might need to look at a 6.5/ 7.5 ton to get the payload.

This would depend on whether she wants to travel them forwards/backwards or herringbone.
If my memory serves me right most underweight boxes are 7'6" wide (could be out by a couple of inches ) The larger ones are 8'2" ish these are external measurements.
So on that basis, you can see that it makes a difference which way you travel them. Herringbone at smaller width needs extra length to allow the body to be more diagonal. Hope that helps.

If you travel the horses herringbone - the width you would need is 7ft 6in and the height 7ft 6in. The maximum legal width of a lorry is 8ft 2in. Research has shown that horses travel best facing backwards (there were tests done with horses wearing heart rate monitors). The equitrek website will have all the internal dimensions you need. For as 16.2 facing forwards, the dimensions of the Ifor Williams 510 will give you a good guide. We have very large heavy horses and they travel facing forwards. The horse space (for the body, not including their head) is 7ft 2in, there is 4ft available for where there heads go, the height is 7ft 9in. We had it specially built for very large heavy horses so a 16.2 wouldn't need anything nearly as big. If you choose a lorry where the horses faces forwards or backwards you would need a side ramp.

BTW Which is the best way to travel them???

Herringbone. Distributes the horses weight more evenly across the box (so all of the weight isn't sitting on one side of the box).
