My job involves travelling through southern spain by road and I am often faced with dogs that have been either abandoned or strayed onto the motorways of southern spain. All sorts of dogs from golden retrievers to mongrels, dodging heavy traffic, frightened and helpless. No one stops or slows down, even if they get off the road there is often nowhere for them to find food or water. You really can not believe the number of dead dogs I pass in one day. Where possible I do stop and check they are dead and not lying injured (although God knows how I would get them help if they where alive), I also carry a sack of dog food/water as some find their way into service areas. If anyone knows of any spanish rescues that would be prepared to come out and pick up these dogs please could you pass on their number? (gardia/police not at all interested regardless of what the law says). I know Spain seems along way away to most people but its so hard when your faced with it every week, I call myself a dog lover but feel a total sh*t that I cant do anything for them. I know some of you live in spain and any help or advice you could give would be really welcome.

I live in spain near Malaga and yes this problem is disgusting . It upsets me so much , in our yard over the last 5 yrs we have had approx 25 strays dumped on us, the local charities try to help but are always full .A charity called CAS tries to spay ect and has started sending dogs to germany and holland . With the financial crisis the problem is getting worse and many english people returning to the uk are just abandoning dogs in the street it really is heartbreaking . Agree that police and guardia do nothing to help !We all drive around with dog food and water but you feel of little use .

I don't go abroad any more for this very reason

Spain, Greece, Turkey etc etc are all th same. It can't hurt to carry food and water round, but other than that you must feel so helpless. It would make me too sad.

may give you some help, they are primarily for greyhounds or Galgas but may be able to give you some suggestions.

Keep on caring, what you do may be a drop in the ocean but lots better than doing nothing

Its not bad in this area but even so the pereras are often full. If we pick something up we take it to the perera if it is healthy, or our vet and we also have a local agricultural shop who accepts dogs on saturday mornings, and people come in and adopt them, the vet practice at the shop does a free preliminary health check for the new adoptive parents. I must admit, this is a local thing and not an x-pat scheme. Maybe a similar thing could be set up there if someone was to approach the right shop? The costa del sol is certainly a blackspot.
