Ok, so Ruby is now well into her 6th month and Im starting to make our training sessions a bit more frequent. She really does enjoy focussing her mind and its proving quite hard not to get her overexcited...she loves it.

However....and this is the embarrasing bit.....I put her into 'down' and then 'wait', I walk a few metres away from her, I wait for 10 seconds and then recall....she comes back to me....about a metre from me she goes down into 'roll on your back with your legs in the air wagging grinning like an idiot'. Now as far as I know this isnt a normally used gundog training command and where its come from I dont know!

I always praise her as she has returned and is, to all intent, in the 'down'.

Will this pass??

Ahh my Spangle does this, usually when I have been trying to get her to recall and she has been ignoring me. As I approach ready to rugby tackle her to the ground she rolls over, legs akimbo wagging her tail like something demented. She also does it when she has snuck up onto the furniture. This is occassionaly followed by a Spangle moment!

Personally I think she sussed fairly quickly, that making me laugh is a sure fire way to do as she pleases!

People didn't warn me about this with spangles; they are naughty but so blooming cute when they wag their tails and give you 'that' look that you can't be angry at them......makes training VERY hard....

Oh well at least Im not alone!

When we go to 'school' I can insist that this is a trait rather than a fault!!

Are you praising her whilst she is doing it? If so, I would do as you normally do (down, wait, recall) and when she has her 'moment' take a couple of steps back and call her again. Just ignore the behaviour, don't tell her off and don't praise her, just keep asking for what you actually want.
If she's a metre away from you, on her back, then she isn't doing what you've asked her to, so no praise. When she finally does as you ask, praise, but if she goes into her 'moment' again, stop.
Working Cockers are wriggly worms and it is a trait, but it doesn't mean you have to put up with it! :D

She sounds like a sunmissive kind displaying that type of behaviour, I would do as Hen suggests and either keep stepping backwards till she reaches u, don't give any eye contact, just stare ahead with a treat in your hand that she has to reach to get from you, or turn your back so she has to come around the front of u and present herself in the sit to get her treat, if u bend down to her or talk, it will probably make her worse, with submissive behaviour it's better to make less, less eye contact, less talk, and less bending towards them.

Thanks guys. Cayla she is quite submissive, very girly and obviously quite sensitive to me already.

I had a quick go with what you have all suggested earlier -I happened to have small piece of cheese about my person - and she did eventually present herself correctly. Obviously the ensuing praise resulted in furious wriggling but it was above ground level on all fours which is a big improvement!!

Thank you all! xx
