I know lots of you on here have spaniels Beau is my first cocker and has just hit adolescence at 7 months old. So far he has been pretty much perfect recall has been amazing so I've just left him to his own devices and he returned or came when I called. Over the last week he has gotten braver and yesterday I took him where there were lots of bunnies and I had no control he just switched off in the end he caught and killed one. He gave it up eventually.

He has been playing with my uncles cocker over Christmas and he gets very obsessed with having something in his mouth, Beau isn't that bothered by that at all.

We are off scent training today and he starts his regular baby agility lessons Tuesday but any advice on recall ect please. ......

Could you do gundog training with him? It doesn't mean he has to go shooting, Cinamontoast trained her three spanners and swears it was the making of them. (sorry CT for probably mis quoting).

Teach the 'stop' whistle.

Adolescent deafness is very common, need to go back to basics in training and either use a long line or only allow him to run where it's safe.

Does he retrieve? If not teach him, use dummies, balls etc all nearby so he will start to think that being with you is where it all happens. When he is distracted pop some down around you then allow him to hunt that area. You can introduce directional training which will be good for his agility.

My youngsters are trained and utterly focused, but bunnies might overcome this! I echo he stop whistle, extremely useful tool and while it make take a while, something I would absolutely practise to the nth degree. I think 7 months is the usual age for cheeky self reliance to appear!

There is a was breeder in Melchbourne who is a very good gundog trainer. She helped Tony with recall issues when Jasper was young. I can pm you her number if you want it.

Another vote for gundog training - I work all mine and stop and recall are the basis of it all....and a stop to flush!
