Spaniel experts!

I groomed a spaniel tonight, he was going to be pts, as he was apparently aggressive, however I agreed to groom him (very matted) he looked a little uneasy at me when I initially approached, I took the lead and he was muzzled, but I removed it, as could not get round his head to clip up, he was very good for me to groom even though those around me winced when I was doing him, obs they expected him to bite me, I did alot of pulling of tats and moving him in awkward positions and he was fine, so im not convinced he is truely aggressive and maybe just aprehensive around stranger or those who show fear.
Apparently he is a welsh spaniel, he basically looks like a very tall cocker, lovely silky hair, he is golden, one solid colour, I googled them and he does look like one, has anyone else had one/got a pic? are they solid in colour the one I googled where blenheim and white he is going to be rehomed poss by us if we have space but has to stay where he is at present, he needs an experienced home poor lad, he is only about 18 months to 2 years.

If it's a Welsh springer, not sure they can be solid colours, maybe a Field or Sussex spaniel?

ETA after Googling, don't think you could describe either of those as golden.

Poor sausage, he doesn't sound that aggressive if he was letting you pull mats out, although he probably realised you weren't t be messed with! My Dad's soppiest cocker will have a growl at that (Otto doesn't but he is a real soft lump!)
He doesn't sound like a Welsh Springer if he is a solid colour. In fact doesn't sound like any kind of Springer if he is solid. He could be a Springer X Cocker I guess, but seems likely that he is a big Cocker, one of the litter we had turned out HUGE!

Ah, you beat me too it Field was a good point except for the Golden part though, Sussex have sawn off legs though!

Not sure about Brittanies, but they don't look Spaniel-ly to be passed off as a Springer IMO.

I knew I would lure u in Hen to be honest to be he looks like a larger than normal cocker, or maybe a red setter x cocker....lol, are field spaniels tall?, I would say def not a springer x cocker though.
I knew it would help if I jsut had pics, not that I did much justice with the hair cut, it was pitch bloody black and the clipper had a 40 blade on, I had to scissor alot as not to baldey to poor fecker

I jsut googled field spaniel, he def looks alot like one of those, they look a little leggy, I thought they where small.

I will I promise, I had a mobile with a **** camera as dropped my good one in a bucket of paint last night I will def get a pic tomorrow.
He did look very scared, I think he would make a loving dog in the right home, I let him off the lead when I was done and he waddled back to me for a stroke.

The only Spaniel I can recall that can have a solid golden colour is the American and the English Cocker Spaniel. Of the other large European Spaniels, as I recall, only Field Spaniel, Deutscher Wachtelhund/German Spaniel and Sussex Spaniels can have solid colours (I excluded Cavaliers and King Charles Spaniels as to small and Irish Water Spaniels, as I think you would have mentioned the non-shedding coat).

I don't know if you have many Deutscher Wachtelhund/German Spaniel in UK or if this could be considered as a Golden colour

Though it should be sweet at home, it should be sharp when hunting and in Sweden, it is sometimes even used to e.g. hunt wild boar. Maybe the name became confused, somebody called him a Wachtel Spaniel and later it became a Welsh Spaniel?

So, perhaps he is a large working Cocker Spaniel from Wales? A wrong coloured Welsh Springer Spaniel? Who knows.

Any Working Cocker worth it's salt will have a lot of Welsh blood, so it is possible someone got confused.

The one from my Mum's litter was the same size as a Springer, yet the Parent's were both average sized, as was the rest of the litter. In fact Springers and Cocker used to be classified on size alone, so you could have a Springer and a Cocker in the same litter, it just depended on what size they were!
Nowadays with the working lines in both Springer and Cockers, you get such a variation in size. One of the dogs on the shoot is a 3 year old Cocker, but is so tiny that she looks an 8 week old pup!
If he is Golden, I would hazard a guess he is a Working Cocker that is just a bit of a throwback, rather than a Field. But it's possible I guess!

Either way the little poppet needs to come and live with me, Otto will teach him that being soft with humans gets you exactly what you want

Ive had a Welsh Springer in the past and they are definitely not solid colour. If this 'spaniel' is golden Im sure its not a WS as they have truly 'conker' red hair. Sounds like you were grooming a wocker or a field.
