On a gundog selling site on FB someone is selling a 12 month old spaniel, I think cocker, that has only been exercised on the lead or in a secure concrete run. That is said as a plus, so I assume anyone wanting to train it for working will not have to deal with any unwanted behaviour. Poor little mite! I know that ours will probably be as mad as a March hare by comparison but what a life for a pup.
 
I would guess recall will be non-existent then!

Seriously, sounds like it will be very unsocialised. A nervy spaniel is no fun for anyone, let alone the spaniel. They are such a bouncy, confident breed naturally.
 
I walked a gun dog in the kennels once, thing was crazy. It clearly was crated for long periods, cause it only knew how to move in a tight circle. The only way to get it to walk was to put a stick in front of its face otherwise it just spun in a circle on the lead.

Spacefaer, I expect it recalls in the 'prison' but what when it smells rabbit for the first time? It'll be gone, if it is brave enough.
 
Leaving them relatively alone until 8mo isn't uncommon in gundog world although old fashioned. You'd be surprised on the recall though - if they've not learned to roam and pull out and all their finds and successes are controlled and occur in an around your feet ten they tend to stick close hunting for the next one.
 
I don't think £1000 is unreasonable for a 12 month old spanner, it would have cost £600/£700+ as a pup and has been kept for a year. BUT a year old dog I would want it to have done more than run around a concrete run. I just think it is a horrible way to keep anything, like expensive horses never getting turned out, they are animals first and tools second.
 
Ok, I phrased it incorrectly, I should have said “lots of money”. I totally accept that a well-trained dog in any discipline should command a decent price. It means, however, that eg Spanielaid may not have the funds to get him.

Ah! Yes, I see. I don't think he is a rescue case really, to my mind it is neglect but lots of people seem to look at it as at least not a negative. Funny old world. Hopefully he will go to a home where at least he works a lot.
 
SAUK won't pay for a dog, unlike some other 'rescues' SAUK educate owners that sometimes it's better to give up a dog to a registered rehoming charity than advertise for next to nothing. Another spaniel charity often raise funds via fb to buy dogs that are going for £3/400, in my mind those dogs don't need 'rescue' generally one would hope that someone paying a decent sum for a dog would care for it.
