Here you go - it's not too bad actually

There is a stud, horses "quarter mile" and "pure Arab blood" in the province of Alicante, which has long been leaning on the project "Around the world on horseback." As you know people who are following this before the big adventure, we have been busy training and selecting the horses that will accompany us.

Padan Shah, is this stud Arabian stallion, and the horse given by it to be part of this team. We are in the preliminaries to make the Spanish diagonal (from Santiago de Compostela to Caravaca de la Cruz) but, before starting it, I had to try to Padan.

We barely knew each other, and, as is known to all, the Arab race carries a very special temperament. My training on the other hand, it allowed me to ride more than two days per week, and as long as that was about it, was two and a half hours, so that closing date with Terrie (the owner of the stud ) could not help feeling a bit worried ... worried that I had shown Padan really strong temperament, though, at a time, nobility had a deep down I conveyed a special sympathy towards him.

Select a route that, a priori, it was quite hard (then it was more because the temperatures did not drop at all), it, was out of El Fondo dels Neus (province of Alicante) and reach the Cup Bullas (extreme Northwest of Murcia) where I planned a 24-hour rest. It was a 300 km route he intended to do in a maximum of 11 days and not less than 8, the end result, I admit, surprised me at the same stud, as it was a very hilly route.

For this trip, selected a lightweight synthetic saddle, saddlebags a front, a back, and instead of sleeping bag insulation, etc. ... just a blanket, it certainly is infinitely more versatile than the sack.

Padan had never done a route of more than three hours, and had never slept away from the stud, so that, as expected, the first day was a "struggle" (peaceful) to make him understand that today there came back home ... I mean, the minimum rate, turned and tried to move towards "Rocky Corner".

Our first stage was from the bottom up Abanilla (Murcia province already), there are no trails usable for that route, so we were forced to do much has "offroad" forced me to play pretty mouth Padan, for other hand, was very comfortable with a simple steak and a nap English ... the rest of the way we did on the A-9, a road along the dry (but magical) Chícamo River Canyon, a real landscape that I recalled trips earlier by Israel and Palestine.

The air was almost always chosen step (aguate suitable to measure long-term), dismounted several times to check the mood of Padan and since that first day, when "vented", I realized that here was a true friend ... is known by lovers of this breed, these horses are really expressive, his ears always tell you something, and her big eyes, let you see deep inside, almost every feeling becomes transparent.

Until we find the right rhythm of step, and until Padan became convinced that, by reckless drivers who are, if we we kept aside, it was hard to run over us, we had the odd scare ... but after those first 6 hours, we reached without too many mishaps ... Abanilla the river that passes by is really salty, so I had to stop at the edge of town, to go to the cemetery and fill my bottle folding, to hydrate and to Padan me dinner. We slept in an olive grove, and at night, we had the visit of Pity, a dog that in the absence of other canine company, stayed with us. Padan was good grazing and, contrary to what I thought, did a bad gesture when being tied load was too light to afford an electric fence or the like and burn relieved that responded well to being tied.

In the morning we link path leading from Abanilla pilgrimage to Caravaca, which we would have to divert on a couple of occasions.

The following days passed through towns such as Fortuna, the landing place for the saw, Ulea by nearby valley of Ricote, Murcia, Yéchar, Puebla de Mula, Bullas, and the Cup ... journey that, thanks to the fitness of Padan (and mine, why not say) could do in a very creditable time. However, I must point out a few things of the trip.

Without doubt, the toughest stretch was the Ulea we took of the Puebla de Mula, were 12 hours of stage, yes, 12 hours, 6 of which discoursed very busy roads, and traveled by vehicles not say to 50 km per hour, no, I mean a little cars passing us three feet at speeds of 110 km per hour, the speed limit on that particular road is 90 km / h but it would be nice that some drivers will use only some good judgment when they approach a binomial human / animal.

Padan, when I was dismounted, I stepped on a couple of occasions, one of them, a nice mixer driver passed us by one of these roads, the Vega Baja del Segura known as "garden path", to about 70 km / h, so unsurprisingly Padan, seeking refuge, sticks to the rider as much as you can ...

The day that had mountains Ulea and cross road to Puebla, was surely the day more tedious than I spent on horseback, had a respectable 41 º C, and the lack of fresh water was almost complete ... the boots literally I burned, and not for the nice Pepa found in the gas station near Yéchar, and an hour and a half from our destination, we had continued going very badly, in fact, we gorged on water and is more, gave me water from that brand (2 bottles!) that comes in a glass bottle, and even wanted to charge us.

For when he had four days to Padan, and knew that my horse was traveling, I tested (even video taped) releasing on a large estate, and, when the hours had passed, I went to look and I had only to whistle and call by name, to come to me with a cheerful trot ...

Of the last places in the 300 km, I must emphasize, once again, the amazing thing uninhabited places, I mean the countless number of houses, farmhouses, mini-villages, I've been finding our way, in places as daunting Ricote as saws, instead, Rabla Salada, the Humbria ... it still seems curious that humans, preferring to follow "queue" in buildings, in apartments of 60 m2, to be surrounded by nature and the most authentic, only half a day's ride from major urban centers. Not that I speak from the perspective of a dreamer, or bohemian, or romantic ... no, I say this because in some of these places, yet (when searching by necessity) I realized that the wells dug by our ancestors, still have fresh water, which the field is still fertile, which, in short, life is still possible.

Flies have also been involved in this trip, in fact, some of them, I think he has the record for staying with us, the second day of travel, we go through a central disinfection of livestock vehicles, and the cloud that went there in pursuit of us, we started a gallop that only served to stoke the desire to reach those bugs ... I'm so used to living with these insects during certain times of the year, but I have to admit, ever, ever, I had seen surrounded by a cloud of that caliber for so long, it goes without saying that I slip in through the mouth (some deep enough so there was no return) and Padan, became less cranky with them (remember that the first day a single fly had him shaking his head like a madman, but now ... when he had no more than 3 or 4 dozen, hardly cared). I had the misfortune of being almost literally eaten by a legion of fleas and ticks another day. I camped in the wrong place (in the neighborhood, as I percataría morning had passed a flock of sheep) and parasites left behind, made my his dinner ... that's not counting the ants and wasps that with rising temperatures , left his light slumber.

Overall, and in summary, this was a trip to promote the stud that I'm getting almost all the support, we tested its most renowned stallion, and the note has been outstanding, Padan, made of 60 stages km, learned to eat while walking, did not refuse one, and kept in shape and with gas at almost all times ... animals raised in Rocky Corner, are undoubtedly the most balanced and stronger than I've known so today.

I take this last paragraph to thank some people the support they have been giving me lately, I can not mention them all, obviously, but Juanjo, Merida, has been very supportive and it gave me a great book for this route, Wow, Madrid, and recognized person in the western world, has given me advice that, when put into practice, has shown me that there are still real cowboys whose main concern is still the horse, Terrie and Rocky Corner, for their support over that unconditional, Angie, Malaga, my great friend Tenza, for their assistance in the preparation of the different routes, and a number of you, whose mails of encouragement and support, offers of hospitality ... make that, despite not having practically economic means, is conducting this project whose standard remains:

"CARING AND RESPECT OUR PLANET, LET DREAMING that anything is possible, that hospitality exists, that the world can be greener, HABLITABLE, purer ... let the next generations to be proud of our heritage"

thanks!!! I thought it said the stud was called rocky corner but then thought it referred to rocky corner as an area and can't find a stud called rocky corner on internet. Just found out that Padan is my mares sire so looking for owner info.
