I would - a lot of roadside rescue companies won't tow a vehicle with livestock on board but they will change the wheel over (or can get a company out to you that can).
I don't know if it's a legal requirement or not to carry one but it must be common sense to. I dread to think how much you would be charged to buy & have a tyre fitted at the side of the road, even if you are on breakdown cover you would still have to pay for the tyre.
Oh, I carry a spare with me for just such an event, fortunately I haven't had to use it.....yet.
Hi, its not a legal requirement to carry one, however, most recovery company's do have it in their T&C that you do, otherwise a callout may be chargable, and if you breakdown without one your at the mercy of the tyre / recovery company.
I do not have one on my lorry as i was told you dont legally need to have one as your not legally allowed to change the tyre yourself. I had a blow out in my lorry-i phoned my recovery company who immediately asked me what size tyre it was. The recovery man came out within an hour on a sun morn with replacement tyre which i was NOT charged for!!
Toby, its not law to have to have a spare wheel, our Euro Cargo has go no braket anywhere to carry one, having said that our old Ford cargo had one under neath on a sort of bracket/pully thingy, when my sister had a blow out going hunting my BIL came out to rescue her, the damn spare had rusted up and corroded on so he couldnt release it from under the lorry, it eventually had to be ground off!!!
Carry one and other half changed it when had a blow out last year. Lorry didn't have an underneath bracket on it but we bought one at a scrap yard. As far as cars go, I think it is not compulsory to carry one but if you do carry one it has to be legal tread etc. Not sure on the legal side re lorries.
I have 'get you home ' insurance for my 7.5 ton Cargo. They stipulate that the should be a spare wheel carried inside. They are understandably not prepared to grovel underneath trying to unbolt heavy probably filthy wheel. I obtained my spare from a lorry dismantler and stand it at living end with water carriers.
Changing a lorry wheel is not really a job for an amateur. However that doesnt excuse not carrying a spare wheel.Changing a tyre on the motorway is dangerous enough, but having to spend twice as long doing it because a new tyre has to be put on the rim is doubly dangerous. Assuming ,that the old rim is even usable.Sometimes the rim is damaged as well. Then you are really stuck!
It is not a legal requirement, but if you do carry one it must be legal and would suggest you do carry one because if you don't and you have a blow out/puncture most roadside recovery companies do not carry a spare.
I don't carry one. I have had 2 blow out over the years and tbh, neither myself or my mother could change the tyre even if we had one, so made no diffference whatsoever.
