Hi All,

I have had my boy coming up for two years. He is a 10 yr old, welsh D.
After I got him we realised he was an occasional cribber and wind sucker. He can be a bit of a stress head but I have tried to manage this the best I can, 24 x 7 turnout in summer (but on restricted grazing to keep weight in check) and normally 7am – 6pm turn out in winter.

End of August, turned out into new paddock and first bout of spasmodic colic. 5 weeks later another spasmodic colic but had been on practically bare paddock. Both times given anti-spasmodic and bute by vet. Pushed vets to scope for ulcers end of October, these were found. Treated with Gastrogard and put on Coligone. Re-scoped just before Christmas and ulcers had cleared.

Prior to scoping feed was scoop of Dengie Good Doer am and pm with his calmer and brewers yeast in, when stabled he had a medium haynet which would see him through with a little left in the morning.

Since scoping he now has adlib hay when in, hay also in field during day. Breakfast is scoop of Dengie good doer with Coligone, and now Ekygard (prescribed by vet). Dinner is scoop of Fast Fibre with calmer, Coligone and Ekygard.

This week another bout of spasmodic colic. The field he was in had an ok amount of grass and had access to hay as well.

Having seen the difference in the scoping we’d hoped he was going to be ok on the maintenance plan but am now trying to find any triggers which could have started this last bout.

When I first got him previous owners couldn’t tell me when he was last wormed. When I wormed he did have a Bot fly problem. Worm counted afterwards and this came back ok. When we first scoped we did see Bot fly larvae despite being regularly wormed by me. We then wormed with Equimax on the recommendation of the vet, larvae did not show on second scope. I know Equimax should cover tapeworm but now I’m wondering if they are present and could be the trigger for the colic as well? I am organising for tapeworm blood tests and another worm count as I want to rule out as much as possible.

He doesn't struggle to keep weight on, he's probably a little bit rounder than I would like.

Any experiences of managing anything like this or ideas on what else I can do??

Sorry it's long

One of my 4 had regular 6 weekly colic - turned out cereals (soya in particular) was his problem. Stopped all bagged feed and it's gone.

But sounds like you don;t feed bagged feed.

The other thing that has helped him immensely is linseed meal - it acts as a mucilage and natural antiinflamatory (3&6) - its relatively cheap and it helps both of mine who have sensitive tums.

I feed two tea mugs for the big guy and one for the cob.

Tapes can cause colic, the test it is a blood test - your vet would need to do this.

Not sure which area you are, but with the snow melt and change in weather it may have also acted as a trigger??

my mare was wormed with equimax pyratape few weeks ago

last week coliced, turns out tapeworm passing caused an impaction and likely to have inflammed the gut

fingers crossed all is well again now

Is the soil sandy? My pony suffered from spasmodic colic for 2 months before sand was found in her gut after being referred to a Veterinary hospital.

It is not widely thought of in this country like it is in the States but if you are grazing mostly on bare pasture they can easily ingest soil along with the grass roots.
