Had vet out this evening suspecting my girl had spasmodic colic even though she's never had it before. Vet agreed, gave her an injection and recommended small amounts of hay in water and a sloppy feed to get fluids in to her.

When I left yard, she did want to eat which she hadn't during day but how soon after the injection and some hay would you expect a horse to poo?

Keep checking her as it can return, I would check her a few times this evening to make sure she is ok for the night. I would expect a poo by now and her not to eat much feed for tonight. Do you know what caused it???

Asthma attack?
eating bedding
sand?
dirt??
worming?

When did she last pass some droppings? Did the vet clear any out from her when he examined her? I'd check her hourly until you're sure she's passing droppings normally again, and looking happy.

ETA Good luck, it's a very tense time being on colic watch.

Moya 999 and Tiddlypoo,

Last time she passed droppings was early afternoon but she didn't eat during afternoon and only started to want food after visit from vet.
Vet didn't seem too concerned about her not pooing providing she was eating and seemed comfortable. I always thought passing droppings was what they wanted to see so you know there isn't a blockage.

She was checked about an hour ago and she had eaten wet hay so given a bit more but still not had a poo.

Vet not sure what's caused it although after checking her she's fairly certain it's medical colic. My girl's routine has changed slightly this weekend so could be that although she's not a stressy mare and she's never had colic before. Unlikely to be worms because she's checked and wormed accordingly.

Didn't do a rectal examination because my girl was so tense and she's got none malignant tumours making entry difficult and she had no symptoms to suggest surgical colic. Heart rate normal, gum colour good and gut working overtime.

Vet asked me to update her about 10ish

She seemed fine this morning, ate a small sloppy breakfast and then went in field. Came in about 4ish and started to show colic signs again. Vet been out, sedated her and managed to do a rectal examination and also tube her. She's on starvation diet tonight and can have a sloppy breakfast in morning if she's passed droppings. When checked by YO at 10pm she was lying down and no droppings yet.

Fingers crossed she's done some droppings in morning or I'll be calling vet out again first thing.

I'm heartbroken that my beautiful mare was PTS on Tuesday. The mild colic symptoms were secondary to something more sinister. Can't believe there weren't any signs that she was ill until it was too late. She also looked so well and was bright and alert until the end.
Run free beautiful girl, I miss you so much.

So very sorry to hear this.

Console yourself that she was so bright right up until her final illness.

When you posted that she had colicked for a second time, I feared the worst, but hoped for a better outcome. You could have done no more.

Remember the good times.

*Hugs*

Oh believe me, possibly one of the worst phone calls I've ever taken so far was last year (a year ago thursday to be precise). Someone rang me asking if I knew who would have ponies in a field down a certain track as some horse riders had found a dead foal by a fence. Was mine. :(

Loss is very hard at times, made worse when I had to come home and tell my then 6yr old that his foal had died. Hearbreaking, so I share people's feelings when they lose a precious friend.

((HUGS))

So sorry - my old mare (28) had a spasmodic colic attack a few weeks ago, but fortunately it was quite mild and she'd pooed so the vet gave her a buscopan injection and she's been fine (touch wood) since. It's such an awful thing to happen but you still have your memories to cherish. RIP lovely lady.

Thanks Doris68, the mild colic symptoms were secondary, before that there had been no indication there was anything wrong with her. Pleased you girl is OK
