A friend had the vet out three weeks ago… twice in two days then again the following week for her ottb. Vet said it was spasmodic colic but they were not yet out on grass…
She is on a worming programme with her vet. She was really worried and called me.
I asked her when she last wormed, she said she hasn’t as the vet said they were fine…
I advised her to worm, so she did a worm test again and sent it to the surgery and planned to worm the next day …
Vet called her and said he had tapeworm!! Wtf she literally just had them tested end of march..

After more investigation, the vet said they got the results wrong..

Baffled by it to be honest !! 😳

Which test was wrong - the older one? Were they only doing FEC? My friend didn't realise that didn't pick up tapeworm and her 3 were full of them when she did the saliva test then drugs.

Her older so called bombproof mare had been running away with her on rides - completely out of character. Slowly returned to normal after a year of treating the tapeworms.

Hopefully your friends mare will feel better after worming

All better now, the test was done on 31/3 and results couple of days later. And she was given the wrong horses results 😳

Tapeworm is often a cause of colic. Did she have the Equisal test done? This is not done at the vets but sent off to Equisal’s lab where they developed the test. All samples are barcoded so should not be possible to mix results!
I hope she gets a refund from the vet for all those visits.

Its redworm too that can cause this as my Bailey was always getting spasmodic colic, so much so the vet said to give her 3 or 4 bute, put her on the walker or lunge for 20 and put back in stable to monitor. If colic was still there the pain would over ride the bute and to call them out.

She was wormed for redworm but it made no difference. I was told by one of the vets to scope for ulcers as this can also be a contributory factor.

I tried muzzling, limiting time out and strip grazing. The only thing that worked was sloppy feeds (speedi beet added) and changing field water - not topping up like most people do but actually scrubbing out and refilling every 2 to 3 days. This stopped it totally and in her last two years she went from one episode every two to three weeks to once in two years.

We have had two or three on our yard that have gone doen with spasmodic colic in the past month. Vets said its very common at the moment.

She also had two nephrosplenic entrapments/left dorsal displacements. We have had three on the yard have this too strangely but then we are a 40+ yard so that is probably average.
