my 3 year old JRT is going in to be spayed today... feeling very nervous! my OH managed to get out of taking her by being the office today, so i have to be the bad cop!

I am worried for the 7-10 days afterwards as my OH is then away with work and she is used to have free rein on the house and furniture. I will block her in the kitchen with her bed whilst i go to do the horses and at night i will shut the bedroom door so she stays in with me, however i am worried about her jumping off the bed in the night. She is a daddy's girl so im worried on top of the op she will be unsettled because her dad isnt home.
She hasnt been in a crate since she was a puppy so i feel that may upset her more.

When im home, ill watch her like hawk and when she wants to go upstairs ill carry her and make sure all the bedroom doors are shut. But hopefully, she will just sleep on the sofa whilst i work. Or if im up in the office, ill lift her on our day bed and she can sleep on there.

Reassurance needed!!

Mine are always crated for at least the first 3 days post op so I can’t help. I think if you are having her loose you really will just have to be hawklike.
On the plus side she’s a small dog and should heal very quickly. Good luck. I hate dropping them off for it. I hope she’s soon home with you again.

Firstly well done on getting her spayed. I'm sure she will be fine, if she's had keyhole surgery its a quicker recovery than conventional spaying. Our dog was never allowed on the furniture when I lived at home with my parents.

So when she was spayed we collected her from Birmingham Dogs Home (they did spays as part of the purchase price) they said don't let her jump up on any furniture and we replied "Oh no need to worry on that score, she's not allowed on the furniture". We got her home and left her on a sheepskin rug in front of the fire whilst Mum and I had a cuppa in the kitchen. When we went in the lounge to check on her she'd jumped up on the sofa and was snuggled next to a cushion! We left her there, she obviously felt more comfortable.

Hope your dog is okay x

Don't underestimate how quiet she needs to be kept for the healing period, too much movement and the muscle layer won’t heal and she may have to have another surgery. So be strict on yourself with it.

BUT also remember she should be tired from the anaesthetic and experience for the first few days. Use some boxes with a towel over and tucked under as steps onto the bed and sofa and make sure she uses them. Take her out into the garden for toileting on a lead only - as they are very good at slowly pottering out for a wee, then post wee zooming a few laps. Keep her mind entertained so she’s more likely to be tired whilst she’s physically restrained - snuffle mats, kongs, very gentle trick training, slow scent work. Close doors so she’s in the room you’re in and if that’s not possible, find a friend that’s had kids and ask to borrow a stair gate.

The fact you are thinking ahead is a good sign! Some owners roll their eyes at the advice and their pets end up paying the price. 10 days is a very small percentage of her life to be quiet. :)

Spaying is a very routine operation so I am sure your girl will be fine. It is awful leaving them at the vets but she’ll be in good hands and be home before you know it. I found a medical shirt was much better than the collar of shame when my GSD bitch was spayed earlier this year. I didn’t crate her but watched her like a hawk and was very strict about on-lead exercise for ten days, which wasn’t easy as she was jumping around as usual after a couple of days.

Mine was spayed last Wednesday, she's a lab. She has been fine, cried a little on the first day but has been back to her usual self since! Quite tricky to keep her quiet but on a lead and max 10mins at walk she's settled into her new sleepy routine!
Her wound looks great and is coming along great! Roll on her check-up on Friday and hopefully she'll get the all clear!

The process start - finish definitely hasn't been as bad as we thought!

Mine was done last monday. I cried when I dropped her off and picked her up! She was super sad day then back to normal. Had her vest on when not supervised but she never even tried to lick the wound. Is coming to yard and roaming around etc but won't walk her for another 5 days or so.

i also cried when i a dropped her off. apparently all went well! picking her up in 30 mins!

It's sad isn't it. I so desperately wanted a litter from her but circumstances won't allow. Plus, I'm unsure I'd have wanted to risk her life with one anyway.

Did feel like I was mutilating my dog though.

A yorkie of mine launched herself off the top of the back of the settee the day after spaying. I'd only been on the phone for a minute or so before that, so she was only unsupervised for about 90 seconds. I was not impressed!

Rang the vets in a panic and they said as long as she's not bleeding... She wasn't and lived, happily for 16 more years.
