i was talking to a man today who keeps his youngsters at my yard and he was telling me he plans to get his fillies spayed and his colt gelded. and suggested that i might get my fillies done??????

colt ok i can understand....

but why get a filly spayed? does it have health benefits or is it just an easy way to stop unwanted foals and seasons? can someone please tell me what the pro's and cons are of doing this? and is it worth looking into as a possible beneficial thing for me to do? xx
thanks for reading xx:)

Never known of a spayed mare. Unless there is a particular health or behaviour prob I'm not sure why you would? I would have imagined it to be a fairly invasive op too esp if it is a full hysterectomy not just removing the ovaries?

You cannot have a filly spayed. A spay op in a dog means removing the ovaries and the uterus, you can't do that in a horse. Although you can have an op to remove their ovaries it is only done for medical reasons, not for contraception.

no never heard of it before either???????:confused::confused::confused:
i agree must be invasive
i know when i got my insurance forms it mentioned spayed mares on a part of it but not sure what about?

again does anyone know why you would do this? and both of his fillies (3 yr olds) are in very good health, 1 has had a foal this year the other has not. just cant understand? and why suggest it to me???

a marble ??????????:confused::confused::confused::confused:

If mares are madly hormonal and regumate isn't doing the trick/cannot be prescribed, a marble can be placed in the uterus to fool the mare that she is pregnant and her seasons will stop. No more narky mare :) ... if you're lucky :).

I've only known one pony had it done and she was manic before having it done.

This does'nt seem a rarety in the USA there were a few hreads on it on the Muleskinners forum before some B****** hacker got it shut down .
People get dogs and cats etc spayed why not horses (At least you would know it wouldn't get bred from there are enough unwanted foals as it is)

Think this man is a bit confused!

You can actually have a mare have her ovaries out but this is usually done after regumate has failed and the hormones are still effecting the mare-usually behaviour.

Mares will be heavily sedated and have a standing ovarectomy. Small incisions are made in both sides of the mare and the ovaries taken out.

I could be wrong, but I doubt he's talking the truth about his fillies. I expect he'd find it extremely hard to find a vet in UK that would be happy to routinely spey a filly/mare. It's very invasive and all operative procedures of this nature are risky. No vet in his right mind would be happy to undertake the procedure without due reason and certainly not without first attempting to remedy any problems in the horse by other less intrusive means. And certainly not do it to a perfectly healthy young filly just because its owner thinks it should be speyed like a dog.

When you next see him, ask him about it. I'd be interested to find out if it's true and why he has it done (and by who!!!) :)

You generally wouldnt spay a mare unless she actually has a ovary problem, its also a pretty big surgery and pricey, my mare was spayed about 6 years ago the op was similar to a colic surgery so on her back with a incision under her tummy it cost in all about £2000 and she has about six weeks box rest,

now i think they can do it by going in through the flank so the cost and box rest maybe reduced but there is no real benefit to spaying a mare that has no hormonal problems

some studs will have spayed mares about for teasing stallions, the idea being that you spay and thenjab the mare into season as she no longer has the ovaries to produce hormones to make her ovulate theorhetically she should stay in season and you then have a yard hussy for the stallions, in my experience though that did not work with the mare we had spayed at a previous job

if you didnt want your mare to cycle a marble would be cheaper and its not quite so permanant

so is the marble and actual marble??? sounds thick but ?

and how do they go about putting it in there? is it a simple op?

never even thought of spaying before and dont htink i could put my little rat bag through it :( even though her season is a night mare sometimes

When I was doing reasearch about this I was lead to belive it is common place in the states, however, the surgeon that did my mare, said that it was still relativly uncommon in the UK and was usually only done if you could show that it was a physical problem and not a pschological issue, especially if going through insurance. The cost for the op in the UK was over £2K. I was also told that it was throught the flanks and it is usually done standing under heavy sedation through the flank and has about a 6 week recovery time.

Unless you have a problem I wouldn't consider this route, and if you want to stop your mare's seasons I would have a chat with your vet about regumate or the marble.

marbles are literally like a little marble it is placed in the uterus of the mare much like the same method as inseminating a mare and it drifts about the uterus much like an embroy in early stages of pregnancy so it tricks the mare into thinking she is pregnant so therefore stops cycling

so simple but so clever ! all with a simple marble. i think if i had to choose it would be the marble! i still dont see why he is wanting them spayed though????:confused::confused:

I have an American friend who rides at a ranch in Arizona, she told me that it is common practice to spay their mares, so this guy has probably read something in the internet & doesn't realise it's not something that is done over here.
