Do you ever feel you neglect your family / home in favour of the horse?

I have to admit once winter comes all thoughts of me helping with any DIY go out of the window. The house looks more like a stable than the stable does, and my youngest resigns herself to wearing wellies every day.

I'll never forget the look on OH's face when he needed some new boots and chose a nice pricey pair and I said "you'l have to get the cheaper ones, I've got the farrier coming tomorrow and I've got to buy some feed too..."

Yes all the time my OH and children(14 and 12) are used to it now! l am self employed,event 3 horses and do alot of riding/teaching/clipping. Although l event most weekends l try not to compete weekends during the winter,so l bsja etc during the week so l am actually at home at the weekend!!
 
I am single and live by myself, so don't have to worry about neglecting family, and the dogs come to the yard with me. My house in another matter though! In winter, I swear it has more bedding than Marnie's stable - the only thing that keeps it from being a complete pigsty is the YO young daughter comes in for 2 hours a week and hoovers, cleans bathroom and kitchen.

No never. My family is more important...however sometimes they have to wait till I'm done with the horses before I spend my time with them. Don't forget though, that this is my livelihood so obviously my family are respectful and accepting of the horses.

My OH gets jealous as I have to 'do' my horses at certain times and can't just drop everything. He says sometimes he feels like he is 4th in my list of priorities, but that isn't true and I ensure I spend time with him etc it's just my animals can't look after themselves where he can

My car/house is always full of hair/bedding/boots/hoofpicks etc

My family are my priority but our horses cant look after themselves whereas my family can.

I am very fortunate that my OH will also cook, clean, shop and help at the yard when he can so we have a good balance between work, family and the horses.

Once upon a time i made the mistake of spending hours of my time at the yard preparing liveries' horses for show days and then grooming at the show and helping out before going in the ring.
So much so that i missed some of my own daughter's classes, as soon as i realised what i was doing my priorities changed around. Always family first. Its just about finding a balance.
 
I have my own home and am single. Im very fortunate that my job affords my lifestyle and keeps me and my horses in a nice life style.

I do find winter a struggle time wise and dont see as much of my friends and family as I would like
 
I spend a lot of time with my horses, but I work with my family, so I get to see plenty of them

My OH is really into football and is glad that I don't moan at him when he plays every Sunday, and 3-4 evenings of training or squadsh in the week, so it works quite well, really.

I don't spend as much time with him as I would like, but I think it works ok at the moment. I imagine if we had children things would change!
 
I have a happy balance really with my horse and family!I spend alot of time with my horse on school days and as i work weekends,my neddy is done quickly so i can spend abit of time with family before going out again,if i want to groom etc at a weekend between shifts little boy comes and helps me!!

Most definately. No husband - however, house looks a bit shambolic. And friends and family hardly see me until the spring......

I have horses so I can go hunting. Thankfully my OH is majorly involved in hunting too otherwise we'd never see each other!! He has his things that he goes off and does as do I.

The house gets cleaned at odd times it must be said but we never live in a huge pigsty nor do we go without food!!

He does say that he comes way down the list of my priorities because of me having 2 horses and a dog but only says it jokingly. He has been brought up by a racehorse trainer father so is aware how much time is spent on horses.

But when push comes to shove he knows that I need my horses and dog to keep me busy and happy. Without them I'd be miserable and he'd hate that!!
 
Not exactly neglect but at this time of the year I feel a bit guilty because when my son comes in from school (he travels home by bus), I am always outside doing the horses and dogs. I always make a point of stopping and having a few minutes with him, but it is usually about an hour before I can spend time with him. He is 14 so doesn't need me to be in the house with him, and probably enjoys chilling in front of the tv but I feel bad. At the moment though he is getting involved cos I am bribing him to help me poultice the donkeys foot !
One or two people have suggested I get rid of the animals ( I am divorced and always short of time and money), but it is them who kept me sane over the past few years, and my children I know feel the same about them, well son could take or leave horses but loves the dogs and cats.
 
I am young and live on my own so don't really 'neglect' my family, though care for the horses does take priority over attending family things like BBQ's and Sunday roasts etc! My OH plays football on a sunday and saturday so perfect excuse for a nice hack out! House gets a bit neglected though!!!
