Speaking of over-protective owners... would you worry...?

PF is going off to stud this evening or tomorrow. She'll be out of my care for a month or so and I'm worrying about EVERYTHING! She's going to Buenos Aires (800km away) with a very experienced transport company, and I'm worried her bandages will slip, or they'll be on too long. I'm worried she'll fall over in the lorry, I'm worried lorry driver'll forget (or not bother) to give her water. I'm worried she'll be given cubes at stud and get colic, I'm worried they'll turn her out and she'll hurt herself...
Obviously I'll mention my fears to the transport peeps and stud, AND if I thought my fears were well-founded I'd not send PF at all. I know I'm being (mostly) irrational and yet I still worry...
Anyone else like me???
 
Yep Yep Yep!!! I worry on a daily basis - whenever I fetch my horse in from the field I have to check his legs before we're out he gate to make sure he's ok! He went away for schooling and i virtually camped out at the yard in the beginning - pestered them with phonecalls constantly

umm, i would never never bandage a horse for that long a journey unless i was going along to check the bandages regularly. other than that, i'm sure they're pros and that she'll be fine.

I think youll feel better once you have openly aired your fears with the transport company and the stud. But yes I do know about irrational fears ... my mares mane is falling out and I had to get the YO to check as I felt guilty to the point of being in tears

What I could suggest is writing them down in a list form, once I have written it down it doesnt seem to keep spinning in my head getting worse. You know deep down that she will be fine as otherwise you wouldnt be sending her

See, that's what I'm worried about. I want her to have the protection as she's a bit of a nervous traveller (since she fell over in the trailer last year) but I'm also worried they won't bother to check the bandages...
 
Yes I am. I went to France for the day last week and left my 3 in the capable hands of someone on our yard that provides assisted livery as and when required but I was so worried. I kept texting with little things that I had forgotten to tell and made her text me when they were turned out and brought in!!! She was very good though and didn't mind all the texts and actually admitted that she would be the same with her horse!!
 
God, I worry all the time about the stupidest of things! Eg. at christmas, we're all going over to my nans, but I refuse to leave Ellie here alone at night, so will come back after midnight to sleep at home! And I dont think I could ever send her away to anyone; the only time she went away for schooling I worked at the yard anyway, so was there to take care of her! And I could never put her in foal for fear of losing her...but most of the time worrying is completely unwarranted!
 
I'm ok with leaving her at the yard as I've got the grooms fully trained now, and they know what a worrier I am!

But I'm so used to doing everything for PF myself that I've convinced myself that no one can do it better (rationally, I know this is rubbish!) *sigh*
 
Aw PF I'm sorry, didnt mean it like that! I'm sure your girlie will be absolutely fine; you sound like you are doing everything right by her! I've just got a phobia of foaling; its a long standing feud between my mum and I - she thinks we should put Elz in foal, but I'm far too selfish! Best of luck with it all!

You're not being irrational, all your worries are genuine concerns and with so many people responsible for horses having such scarily low standards you are bound to worry more. Reassure yourself you have chosen the stud and transport company carefully and give them crystal clear instructions how you like your horse to be managed. There's nothing wrong with envisaging every possible mistake or accident that you can before it happens, thinking about how they can be prevented and expecting the people in charge of your horse to do the same. Once she's gone though unfortunately its out of your hands and worrying won't help at all. Then the best course of action is to get a bit drunk and have a good Christmas!

yep! I worry too although not an over cautious owner, my old veteran is currently with local hunt master, who I hasten to add I have every faith in and know that he will look after my horses basic needs etc.

I am just a bit fluffy with the oldie!!! - like extra bits of tit bits here and there and a scratch in the right place lol!!

He is having a ball by the sound of it but still missing him!!!

She IS having AI, but nobody round here does AI from frozen (all I have available from this stallion) so I've got to send her somewhere they do it properly.
 
I must admit I do worry when my horse is in someone else's hands! Like if I have to go away and I get friends to do them (even though they're perfectly knowledgable), I mainly worry about stupid things like they get the feeds mixed up or something!
 
I was awake at 3 this morning fretting whether junior would be cold hungry etc as he's out. The fact he is rugged to the nines and has spent the day in filling his face with good haylage and simple systems is irrelevant!

No you're not alone!
 
I'm the same - worry over a lot of things but hope they are sensible worries and not silly ones. I knew someone who would have to have the haylage bales tied up in a certain way or she would freak - not because the horses could get near them - just because they HAD to be like that. She'd even wait until everyone had left so she could check. But then she would leave things like pallets lying in the field and we would scream at her and it hadn't even occurred to her

I've never sent mine away but I always worried like mad when I went on hols. My current YO is fab though so I worry less although I do text everyday to check they are all ok!!
