Hi there, 2 gorgeous lovely tempered 14-18 month old lurchers (1 black very greyhoundy, 1 brindle) have come into the care of the rspca in herefordshire today, they really are the most loving tempered dogs ever, they could go separately or together, but these dogs are blind so need special loving homes. Anyone who can offer a home please contact Hereford RSPCA on 0845 200 2962.

This is very very sad and you are going to think me awful but I think the kindest thing is to have them put down. The dog homes and rescues are full to over flowing trying to find homes for dogs that are fit and healthy and I would have thought the chances of anyone wanting a blind lurcher are slim at best.

Lurchers are sight hounds and this seems so cruel I presume its congenital and if so they should have been put down when it became evident.

Not so...
Providing you dont start moving the furniture on a daily basis, and ideally have a sighted second dog, it can be done.
Hope you find somewhere for them CD

I have to say I agree with Dobiegirl on this one :(

Normally I would say a blind dog can have a decent enough quality of life with precautions like joanne suggests but sighthounds live to run at terrifying speeds and hunt by sight so a blind sighthound will never have a full and satisfying life like man other breeds could - a spaniel for example lives by its nose and being blind would be more of an inconvenience than a disability in that case.

I would agree with you and it was contemplated and still maybe, but these dogs love company so much and gave so much in just a short period of time, plus likely were born with this so have not known any different, that it was decided that they should have a chance. They always seem to find you (through scent or sound) and just want to curl up with you, loving fuss and attention, one of them will lead walk by touching his nose to your leg and walk along happily there as long as you talk to him. It still might come to a very hard decision but worth a try to find a home none-the-less. They've come from pretty poor beginnings so in my mind deserve a chance of happiness...............

My first initial reaction was similiar to others re PTS. But I've thought about it (makes a change:o) and even though sighthounds are bred to sight and chase, their scent ability is still there and in that respect they are no different to any other dog that is blind. It will take a special person to do these dogs justice and I have no doubt they are out there. I wish you all the very best in your search:)

One question, O_P, why are they BOTH blind?

Others, and to their credit, will keep a dog which is blind. I wouldn't. That doesn't mean that I'm right, it's just that I feel for a dog which is so impaired, and would struggle with, and would question, what I was doing.

I put my OHs 2 yo lurcher bitch down last year. It still hurts, but I know that I made the right decision.

Alec.
