My horse has spacers between the hoof and shoe in order to encourage the heel to grow and strengthen. This means he has to have a plastic filler to ensure the shoe is solid to the foot. I have been told this arrangement is the best overreach boot equivalent that you can have but it is expensive at £100 every six weeks. The problem with the filler is that the horse cannot stand around in wet. Fine in the summer but will cause problems in the winter. Does anyone know of another method to achieve the same results or boots that he could wear so that we can keep him out in the winter with the herd rather than stable him as soon as the rain starts?

Hi OP, you are going to be surprised by the responses to your post, this issue is highly controversial.

Rockley Farm is a re-habiltation centre for horses [vet referrals], , most horses have been through the mill, they get a new diet, new exercise regime and then get sent home, most are unsound when they arrive and sound when they leave.

Thanks MrsD123 - found that really interesting and intend to read further into it. I must admit I have been intrigued by barefoot riding but just worry about jumping like that.

They are little spacers just like you might use when you are tiling!! They are positioned to raise the necessary side of the hoof to encourage heel growth but ofcourse it leaves a gap that needs to be filled.
