I have recently rehomed a 10hh shetland pony, he had one bad episode of laminitis a while ago, and then again just before he came to me.

I have now had him a couple of weeks, and with gentle exercise, restricted grazing and plenty of forage he's gone from virtually crippled to a happy bouncy pony.

I would like to give him a little extra help though, at the moment hes having both soaked hay and hi-fi lite chaff aswell as a small amount of time grazing with his muzzle. I have been looking at some specialist feeds though and would like any opinions on the foods, which is best? Have you tried any?

The three im looking at are: Spillers Happy Hoof; Dodson & Horral Safe and Sound & Mollichaff HoofKind.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

My mare was diagnosed with laminitis end of March and I was told by the vet and farrier to give her Happy Hoof. I rang Jackie Taylor from the Metabolic Horse and she advised me to either feed Happy Hoof with magnesium of Top Spec. Because Top Spec is difficult to get I have been feeding Happy Hoof and she has been fine with that but I know different diets suit some better than others.

You just have to feed a low sugar/low starch feed; Simple Systems feeds are sugar free, but some horses are sensitive to Alfalfa.

Personally I love Allen and Page Fast Fibre, soaks in seconds and the ponies love it; feed magnesium oxide ( from ebay) if helps with fattty deposits and their feet.

Happy Hoof is good, as well as Safe and Sound, not sure about the Healthy Hooves

Happy Hoof or Safe & Sound are both very good, although personally I wouldn't feed these alongside Hi-Fi as they are both chaff based feeds already, and the combination might not be too palatable...

Yep that is correct - also someone mentioned Simple Systems feeds above, and I would recommend these very highly indeed; not just for laminitics but any 'sensitive' horses. Only thing is, they are a world apart in pricing from the Safe & Sound / Happy Hoof products therefore I'd probably give these a go first to see how you get on :)

I would also recommend you contacted a good herbalist for a herbal mix as these can work wonders xx

The only problem with the complete feeds like Happy Hoof etc., is that you have to feed the recommended amount to get the full supply of vitamins and minerals, which for some porky animals can be more than they need. An alternative is to give a vit/min supplement or lami safe balancer in with the HiFi Lite.
