I am from South Africa where speedi and kwik beet are relatively new and hard to get. I have started using it for my horses, but wondered why one has to discard the water it has been soaked in?

I must say that the plants onto which this water is usually thrown, are thriving and threatening to take over my stable yard - just wondered if it is harmful to the horses or what????

I didn't know you had to discard the water? I usually put less water in, let it soak it up, then add more if it needs it. As it only takes 10 mins to soak it doesn't bother me checking on it to add more water.

Hi, and welcome!

I have never heard that the water should be discarded. I cannot think why it should be in any case. Yes, any surplus is discarded and not used again, but if you make the beet fairly sloppy, surely you are using the water in the feed? I cannot see why it should be harmful to horses.

mmmmmmmmm, it seems strange to me as I am adding fresh water to the feed (oat chaff and lucerne chaff) while throwing out the water from the beet. No one seems to know why, just said to discard the water it is soaked in. I am using the kwik-beet from a very well-known UK company. (not sure if I may mention name)

Just by the way - my dogs make a dive for it if they are out when I am feeding the horses, in fact they love it and the carrots - dont know who eats more carrots, the dogs or the horses actually. (lab and a golden retriever and 2 Australian shepherds)

We used to use the water for one of our horses to make his dinner taste slightly beety without him having any! Also was advised to feed very sloppy sugar beet to my pony when he had an infection and wouldnt eat, as a way of getting liquid down him??! Never did him any harm?!

Although you are buying a brand name that we wold probably know here, maybe the beet is processed in SA and isnt treated in the same way as the UK produced stuff? Perhaps thats why you are advised to discardd the water. Maybe there are residues although it seems unlikely.

What about getting in touch with the makers...it seems a shame to be wasting all that SB water on your plants!

no it is sent packaged exactly as you would get it in the UK - imported directly and sold on to us. There is no difference at all.

i have always used the water its soaked in, i tend to put in to much water as i am a worrier so it makes his dinner rater yumy

thanks for all the replies. I am wondering if someone is muddled here with the ordinary beet - would one throw away this water due to the higher sugar content maybe?????
Whereas with speedybeet there is virtually no sugar anyway.
