Hello peeps, just a question, a few weeks ago I popped Ben on speedie beet, the only change to his feed. First he got a bit spooky/nappy at the sheep even though hed seen them befofe... then we worked through that, now he is just like a little firecracker. Fizzy, jiggy, full of himself, he spooks but only in so much as he takes a step to the side and his eyes go out on stalks... He now has a canter on the hack which seems to sort his head, after this he chills and focuses, although today he still wasn't completely relaxed after it, still looking around, bouncing into trot... Proper hi jinx!

I'm more than able to deal with this, doesn't phase me, but I'm wondering if it could be down to the speedie beet. Initially I put it down to the grass - speedie beet being unmolassed and all, but last year the grass didn't do this to him, even when he had more energy and needed to burn it off he wasn't 'flighty' and silly... He snorts at everything!!! Now he is fit, he is much more self confident now, and so some if it could be this and the grass, but the change... This snorting fizz bomb (who is really quite funny to ride and keeps me on my toes!) only kicked into gear after the speedie beet.

Has anyone else found that SB has this effect on their neds? I'm very much debating stopping the feed.

No mine is fine on speedibeet but does benefit from extra magnesium. Might be worth a try, it is cheap from pro earth or Equine America

Yes, I put three horses of different breeds on SB one winter and all three became noticeably excitable and bouncy until I stopped it.

Thanks guys, he simply was not like this last year when the grass came through, amazingly when I said to someone at the yard... "Oh, I've got some speedie beet for him today". She said it turned hers into a loon, when I asked she confirmed that yes she had fed speedie beet to hers and not sugar beet... I couldn't believe it so dismissed it but the change was so noticeable after he started that I kept thinking about what she said. Well, that is sorted then... No more speedie beet for Ben... But if we ever need more zing, I know what to feed him;):p

Exactly my line of thought. Its that time of year, :D, magnesium levels dropping in grass growing like an express train. Bob the "nota"cob is on his annual add the magnesium ,diet. He is bonkers enough without any magnesium induced insanity.

That does surprise me - it's just fibre! I suppose the sugar might fizz up some horses. No effect like that on my horse though - like others have said, lack of magnesium definitely makes her more spooky rather than anything else.

Yeah me too... But it was so linked, the behaviour clicked in at exactly the same time as the feed change.

Mag wise, I do wonder, it is a possibility but there is no change in any of the other horses, and they are not even supplemented with a general supplement...he is. And he exhibited none of this last year. My first port of call is to stoop the speedie beet... If no change then I will try magnesium. It may be that it's neither, it may be he is just feeling his feet and just a lot more cock sure and confident than last year!

My horse has been spookier the last couple of weeks - no change to her diet other than the grass, wonder if it's something to do with that?

I put my mare in it during the winter, she was on it a month before I stopped it due to her becoming extra spooky and fizzy!!

Initially I did, but I'm not convinced as last year it had no effect on him.

It may just be that this year he is feeling a bit more full of himself because he is more confident when being ridden... He is still a dope on the ground, still good to lunge - more forward to lunge but he needed to be! His tack is fine, and although he is fitter, again he was fit last year. The only significant change is the SB. I did consider magnesium, but none of the other horses at the yard have had this change and nine of them are supplemented with magnesium.

I have not been able to ride since cutting him down on the SB... He now only has the smallest amount twice a day to feed him his supplement. I hope to hack out this evening and see if he is different but my car is broken so won't get there till 6.30 :(

I am wondering the very same about my horse at the moment! I got a supplement about three weeks ago from forage plus and have been giving it to him in speedi beet and he is now suddenly spooking at everything and bucked me off in the field during the week!! So now trying to figure out if its the speedi beet or the supplement thats causing it.
And to think i was complaining about him lacking energy a couple of weeks ago!!
